Andrew Lang's Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's «Coloured» Fairy Books constitute a twelve-book series of fairy tale collections. Although Andrew Lang did not collect the stories himself from the oral tradition, the extent of his sources, who had collected them originally (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made them an immensely influential collection, especially as he used foreign-language sources, giving many of these tales their first appearance in English. As acknowledged in the prefaces, although Lang himself made most of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and telling of the actual stories.


The Blue Fairy Book assembled a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norse stories, among other sources.

Mr. Andrew Lang has made this collection of what used to be called pieces of verse for the delectation of young readers. It is hard to tell what the children would do without Mr. Andrew Lang's contributions to their entertainment. Much as he writes for their elders, he never forgets the little people, and as regularly as Christmas comes round he sends them a literary gift. The Red True Story Book seems interesting to one of the untutored elders, whose travels no longer take him into fairyland; although there will doubtless be plenty of boys and girls to disagree with such a judgment. To these the realm of Prince Prigio will be far more real than the South Africa of today or the France of the fifteenth century; truth is so much stranger than fiction, and these tales of heroism and self-sacrifice are so much more romantic than any manufactured stories. What could be more splendid, more thrilling, than this story of "Wilson's Last Fight," as told here by Mr. Rider Haggard. Andrew Langs series of fairy-tale books are some of the fundamental childrens reading of the twentieth and late nineteenth century.


Many readers who have only seen or read modern, Disney-fied versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Snow-White will not recognize some of the darker twists in these tales. For example, in Sleeping Beauty, when the Prince wakes the Princess and marries her, the story is by no means over. The Princes mother is an Ogress, whom his father married for her wealth, and its suspected that she likes to eat little children; that whenever she saw little children passing by, she had all the difficulty in the world to avoid falling upon them. The happy couple have two children, named Day and Morning, and the Ogress decides to dine on them one day when the Prince is away. Yes, it still has a happy ending, but Disney it isnt.


The Blue Fairy Book is amazing. It has an excellent group of stories from different fairy tale writers, including Perrault, dAulnoy, and Grimm. This book was originally printed in the 19th century. These are the original, unaltered by Disney versions, and contain the nightmarish plots they were meant to have.


Anyone who collects fairy tales should have this, the stories are marvellous entertainment.

One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of stories collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars in various countries across the Middle East and South Asia.
