Andrew Lang's Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's «Coloured» Fairy Books constitute a twelve-book series of fairy tale collections. Although Andrew Lang did not collect the stories himself from the oral tradition, the extent of his sources, who had collected them originally (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made them an immensely influential collection, especially as he used foreign-language sources, giving many of these tales their first appearance in English. As acknowledged in the prefaces, although Lang himself made most of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and telling of the actual stories.


The Blue Fairy Book assembled a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norse stories, among other sources.

Mr. Andrew Lang has made this collection of what used to be called pieces of verse for the delectation of young readers. Precisely what kind of verse is most to the taste of the ripening minds of the numerous class that he had in view is a problem about which opinions may well differ; but one thing seems certain, and that is that, while they may not like many things in verse, they do, and always will, like those which possess the human interest which attaches to stirring events and heroic actions, of which they areas good judges as their elders. Mr. Lang's selections include no living poet, but neglect no great poet of the 19th century, his favorites, so far as he can be said to have any, being Scott, Campbell, Byron, Burns and other spirited singers of human emotion. We should like to be in the place of some of the young readers of Mr. Lang's anthology, that we might have for the first time the pleasure of being moved by Drayton's 'Ballad of Agincourt,' Campbell's 'Mariners of England,' Scott's 'Young Lochinvar,' Byron's 'Destruction of Sennacherib,' Macaulay's ' Battle of Maseby,' and what Coleridge calls that grand old ballad, 'Sir Patrick Spens.' This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer.

Then let him turn and read, out of the same book, the account of " Cowper and his Hares." Bess and Puss and Tiney were doubtless as interesting in their way as the dogs and cats and monkeys owned by Dumas; but the child does not care for them - he begs you to read more from Dumas. Young as the child is, Dumas has cast a spell around him - the spell of a sparkling and animated style. Mr. Lang's " Animal Story Book " ought to delight both old and young, as one may find therein pen-portraits of most of the remarkable animals that have interested the world since primitive times. And because authors are, as a class, peculiarly fond of animals, the reader of this charming book is brought into intimate relations with Pliny, Théophile Gautier, and many other remarkable men. It is hard to tell what the children would do without Mr. Andrew Lang's contributions to their entertainment. Much as he writes for their elders, he never forgets the little people, and as regularly as Christmas comes round he sends them a literary gift. The Red True Story Book seems interesting to one of the untutored elders, whose travels no longer take him into fairyland; although there will doubtless be plenty of boys and girls to disagree with such a judgment. To these the realm of Prince Prigio will be far more real than the South Africa of today or the France of the fifteenth century; truth is so much stranger than fiction, and these tales of heroism and self-sacrifice are so much more romantic than any manufactured stories. What could be more splendid, more thrilling, than this story of "Wilson's Last Fight," as told here by Mr. Rider Haggard. The magnificent mettle of these men, and their brave acceptance of their fate, called forth from the Zulu chieftain who slaughtered them the tribute that " they were men who died like men, men whose fathers were men." This human document is followed by Mr. Lang's narrative of the '' Life and Death of Joan the Maid," and the nobility of her disinterested devotion to her country is vividly brought out. Aside from these, the stories for the most part are unfamiliar but eminently worthy of enduring fame. A few tell of heroes whose deeds are mentioned in the histories that children study, but without the detail that makes them picturesque and vivid.
