Roman "Usta sirota" (An Béal Bocht, 1941.) najpoznatije je književno djelo napisano na irskome jeziku, a ujedno i jedino djelo Briana O’Nolana (poznatijeg po svom književnom pseudonimu Flann O’Brien) na tom jeziku, potpisano kao Myles na gCopaleen.

Iako se O’Nolan zbog zaposlenja u državnoj službi kao pisac služio s nekoliko različitih pseudonima, u slučaju romana "Usta sirota" učinio je to kako bi, osim stilom i radnjom, parodirao tada iznimno popularan žanr fiktivnih autobiografija i tzv. osobnih (is)povijesti u irskoj književnosti. Ta djela, pisana i potpisivana isključivo na gaelskom jeziku, kao svojevrstan otpor stoljećima provođenoj kulturnoj i jezičnoj anglifikaciji, uglavnom su prikazivala nesretan život irskih težaka na selu.

Stoga se i radnja O’Nolanova romana zbiva upravo u takvom ambijentu: u selu Corca Dorcha u zabačenom dijelu Irske, gdje kiša nikad ne prestaje, a svi žive u neizmjernom siromaštvu, dijeleći sa svojom stokom (svinjama) i krov i hranu (gotovo uvijek samo krumpir), ali zato govore „pravim, istinskim gaelskim jezikom“, zbog čega ih sve više posjećuju gaeilgeoiri (entuzijasti za gaelski jezik).

U tom smislu, ovaj roman je i kritika površnog irskog nacional-romantizma toga vremena koji je bio opterećeniji uspostavom kulturnih vrijednosti i jezičnih normi nego teškim životnim uvjetima u Irskoj.

Flann O’Brien’s most popular and surrealistic novel concerns an imaginary, hellish village police force and a local murder. Weird, satirical, and very funny, its popularity has suddenly increased after the novel was featured in the hit television series Lost. The series’ creators have said that anyone who has read the book “will have a lot more ammunition when dissecting plotlines” of the show. Here it comes to life in a new unabridged recording.

Flann O’Brien, along with Joyce and Beckett, is part of the holy trinity of modern Irish literature. His five novels–collected here in one volume–are a monument to his inspired lunacy and gleefully demented genius.

O’Brien’s masterpiece, At Swim-Two-Birds, is an exuberant literary send-up and one of the funniest novels of the twentieth century. The novel’s narrator is writing a novel about another man writing a novel, in a Celtic knot of interlocking stories. The riotous cast of characters includes figures “stolen” from Gaelic legends, along with assorted students, fairies, ordinary Dubliners, and cowboys, some of whom try to break free of their author’s control and destroy him.

The narrator of The Third Policeman, who has forgotten his name, is a student of philosophy who has committed murder and wanders into a surreal hell where he encounters such oddities as the ghost of his victim, three policeman who experiment with space and time, and his own soul (who is named “Joe”).

The Poor Mouth, a bleakly hilarious portrait of peasants in a village dominated by pigs, potatoes, and endless rain, is a giddy parody aimed at those who would romanticize Gaelic culture. A naïve young orphan narrates the deadpan farce The Hard Life, and The Dalkey Archive is an outrageous satiric fantasy featuring a mad scientist who uses relativity to age his whiskey, a policeman who believes men can turn into bicycles, and an elderly, bar-tending James Joyce.

At Swim-Two-Birds is a 1939 novel by Irish author Brian O'Nolan, writing under the pseudonym Flann O'Brien. It is widely considered to be O'Brien's masterpiece, and one of the most sophisticated examples of metafiction. The novel's title derives from Snámh dá Én (Middle Ir.: "Swim-Two-Birds"), a ford on the River Shannon, between Clonmacnoise and Shannonbridge, reportedly visited by the legendary King Sweeney, a character in the novel. The novel was included in TIME magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.
