By the age of thirty, he had written four comedies, including Love for Love (premiered 1695) and The Way of the World (premiered 1700), and one tragedy, The Mourning Bride (1697). After writing five plays from his first in 1693 until 1700, he produced no more as public tastes turned against the sort of highbrow sexual comedy of manners in which he specialized. He withdrew from the theatre and lived the rest of his life on residuals from his early work. His output from 1700 was restricted to the occasional poem and some translation (notably Molière's Monsieur de Pourceaugnac). onathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Irish cleric, satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for Whigs then for Tories), and poet. He is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. Swift published all of his works under pseudonyms - such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M.B. Drapier - or anonymously. He is known for being a master of two styles of satire; the Horatian and Juvenalian styles. Among his most famous works are: The Battle of the Books (1704), A Tale of a Tub (1704), The Journal to Stella (1710-13), The Drapier's Letters (1724), Gulliver's Travels (1726) and A Modest Proposal (1729).

Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) was an Irish playwright and Whig statesman. Richard was educated at Harrow School, and was to study law. However, his highly romantic elopement with Elizabeth Linley put paid to such hopes. His first play, The Rivals, produced at Covent Garden in 1775, was a failure on its first night. Sheridan cast a more capable actor for the role of the comic Irishman for its second performance, and it was a smash which immediately established the young playwright's reputation. It has gone on to become a standard of English literature. His most famous play School for Scandal (1777) is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in English. It was followed by The Critic (1779), an updating of the satirical restoration play The Rehearsal. He was also a Whig politician, entering parliament in 1780. A great public speaker, he remained in parliament until 1812, and was a leading figure in the party. Amongst his other works are St. Patrick's Day; or, The Scheming Lieutenant (1775), The Duenna (1775), Scarborough and the Critic (1777) and School for Scandal (1777).

Horace/Horatio Walpole, (1717-1797), more commonly known as Horace Walpole, was a politician, writer, architectural innovator and cousin of Lord Nelson. His Letters are highly readable, and give a vivid picture of the more intellectual part of the aristocracy of his period. He was born in London, the youngest son of British Prime Minister Robert Walpole. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following his father's politics, he was a devotee of King George II and Queen Caroline, siding with them against their son, Frederick, Prince of Wales, about whom Walpole wrote spitefully in his memoirs. His father was created Earl of Orford in 1742. Horace's elder brother, the 2nd Earl of Orford passed the title on to his son, the 3rd Earl of Orford. When the 3rd Earl died unmarried, Horace Walpole became the 4th Earl of Orford. In 1764, he published his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, setting a literary trend to go with the architecture. From 1762 on, he published his Anecdotes of Painting in England, and in 1785 he published his Hieroglyphic Tales.

Daniel Defoe (1659/1661-1731) was an English writer, journalist and spy, who gained enduring fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe (1719). Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularise the genre in Britain. In some texts he is even referred to as one of the founders, if not the founder, of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote over five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He is also a pioneer of economic journalism. His most famous novel, Robinson Crusoe (1719), tells of a man's shipwreck on a desert island and his subsequent adventures. Edmund Spenser (c.1552-1599) was an important English poet best known for The Faerie Queene (1590, 1596), an epic poem celebrating, through fantastical allegory, the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I. He is recognized as one of the premier craftsmen of Modern English verse in its infancy. He used a distinctive verse form, called the Spenserian stanza, in several works, including The Faerie Queene. His Epithalamion (1595) is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride, Elizabeth Boyle. Through his poetry he hoped to secure a place at court, which he visited in Walter Raleigh's company to deliver The Faerie Queene. However, he boldly antagonized the queen's principal secretary, Lord Burghley, and all he received in recognition of his work was a pension in 1591. His other works include: The Shepheardes Calender (1579), Complaints (1591), Daphnaida (1594), Astrophel (1595), Amoretti (1595), Fovvre Hymnes (1596) and Prothalamion (1596).

Likely composed in the 1580s by Philip Sidney, Astrophel and Stella is an English sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. The name derives from the two Greek words, 'aster' (star) and 'phil' (lover), and the Latin word 'stella' meaning star. Thus Astrophel is the star lover, and Stella is his star. Sidney partly nativized the key features of his Italian model Petrarch, including an ongoing but partly obscure narrative, the philosophical trappings of the poet in relation to love and desire, and musings on the art of poetic creation. Sidney also adopts the Petrarchan rhyme scheme, though he uses it with such freedom that fifteen variants are employed. Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) became one of the Elizabethan Age's most prominent figures. In 1572, after studying at Christ Church, Oxford, he travelled to France as part of the embassy to negotiate a marriage between Elizabeth I and the Duc D'Alencon. He spent the next several years in mainland Europe. On these travels, he met a number of prominent European intellectuals and politicians. Returning to England in 1575, he occupied himself with politics and art. More seriously, he quarrelled with Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, and Sidney challenged de Vere to a duel, which Elizabeth forbade. He then wrote a lengthy letter to the Queen detailing the foolishness of the French marriage. Characteristically, Elizabeth bristled at his presumption, and Sidney prudently retired from court. Sidney had returned to court by the middle of 1581 and was knighted in 1583. His artistic contacts were more peaceful and more significant for his lasting fame. Famous in his day as a poet, courtier and soldier, he remains known as the author ofThe Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia (1580), Astrophil and Stella (1581) and A Defence of Poetry/Poesie (1581).

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, especially dramatic monologues, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. Browning's fame today rests mainly on his dramatic monologues, in which the words not only convey setting and action but also reveal the speaker's character. Unlike a soliloquy, the meaning in a Browning dramatic monologue is not what the speaker directly reveals but what he inadvertently "gives away" about himself in the process of rationalizing past actions, or "special-pleading" his case to a silent auditor in the poem. Rather than thinking out loud, the character composes a self-defense which the reader, as "juror, " is challenged to see through. Browning chooses some of the most debased, extreme and even criminally psychotic characters, no doubt for the challenge of building a sympathetic case for a character who doesn't deserve one. One of his more sensational monologues is Porphyria's Lover (1836); however, My Last Duchess (1842) is the most frequently cited example of Browning's dramatic monologue form.

Thomas Preskett (Peckett) Prest (c. 1810-c. 1859) was a British hack writer, journalist and musician. He was a prolific producer of penny dreadfuls. He is now remembered as the creator of the fictional Sweeney Todd, the 'demon barber' immortalized in his The String of Pearls (1846). He has also been associated with the authorship of Varney the Vampire. He wrote under pseudonyms including Bos, a takeoff of Charles Dickens' own pen name, Boz. Before joining Edward Lloyd's publishing factory, Prest had made a name for himself as a talented musician and composer. Edward Lucas White (1866-1934) was an American author and poet. He wrote a number of historical novels, including: The Unwilling Vestal: A Tale of Rome Under the Caesars (1918), Andivius Hedulio: Adventures of a Roman Nobleman in the Days of the Empire (1921) and Helen (1926); but he is best remembered as a fantasist, for stories such as The House of Nightmare and Lukundoo. These short horror stories were based on his own nightmares. Two collections of his short fiction were published in his lifetime, The Song of the Sirens (1919) and Lukundoo and Other Stories (1927). A much-revised utopian science fiction novel, Plus Ultra, was begun in 1885; White destroyed this draft, but began a rewrite in 1901. In 1918-19 he produced a novella, From Behind the Stars, which he later incorporated into the massive completed version of Plus Ultra, which remains unpublished.

Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936), who published under the byline M. R. James, was a noted medieval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905-1918) and of Eton College (1918-1936), best remembered today for his ghost stories in the classic Victorian Yuletide vein. He is most widely known for his ghost stories, but as a medieval scholar his output was phenomenal and remains highly respected in scholarly circles. His discovery of a manuscript fragment led to excavations in the ruins of the abbey at Bury St Edmunds, West Suffolk, in 1902, in which the graves of several twelfth-century abbots described by Jocelyn de Brakelond (a contemporary chronicler) were rediscovered, having been lost since the Dissolution.
