Sherlock Holmes vient a peine de dechiffrer un message code le prevenant qu’un certain Douglas, de Birlstone Manor House, est en danger, qu’il apprend par l’inspecteur MacDonald de Scotland Yard que Douglas vient d’etre sauvagement assassine. Grace au signataire du message, Sherlock Holmes sait que, derriere cette affaire, se trouve son ennemi jure : le professeur Moriarty, criminel genial et machiavelique. Accompagne de son fidele Watson, Holmes se precipite a Birlstone… Par la richesse de son intrigue et de son action, La Vallee de la peur, ou l’on voit Sherlock Holmes se mesurer avec Moriarty, adversaire en tous points a sa hauteur, est sans doute le meilleur roman de Conan Doyle.

Une enigme sans crime ? Dans la Londres victorienne, entre la toute-puissante City et une boutique minable, pourquoi une petite annonce jette-t-elle autant de rouquins dans la rue ? Sherlock Holmes part ecouter Wagner pour y reflechir. Un crime sans enigme ? Dans la campagne anglaise, un policier sur de lui a deja mis sous les verrous le coupable evident. Durant les dix-sept ans qu’il a passes aupres du grand detective, le docteur Watson a accumule une masse considerable de documents sur ses enquetes ; il en a extrait six pour ces Nouvelles archives, qui appartiennent au meilleur de l’?uvre de Conan Doyle : « La pensionnaire voilee », « Le problemedu pont de Thor », « L’homme qui marchait a quatre pattes », « La criniere du lion », « L’aventure de Shoscombe Old Place », « L’aventure du marchand de couleurs qui s’etait retire des affaires ».

Après le succès des six volumes d’enquêtes illustrées rééditées en 2019, Archipoche publie le recueil Son dernier coup d’archet. L’occasion de suivre huit enquêtes savoureuses du célèbre détective de Baker Street.
En 1908, délaissé par son créateur plus de trois ans durant, Sherlock Holmes reprend du service dans L’Aventure de Wisteria Lodge.
Sept autres enquêtes voient le jour jusqu’en 1917, et notamment Son dernier coup d’archet, la première à n’être pas racontée par le Dr Watson. Mais aussi la seconde tentative de Conan Doyle pour se défaire, en vain, du célèbre détective en l’envoyant à la retraite... dont il ne tardera pas à sortir !
