René Descartes (1596-1650): Fransız matematikçi, bilim adamı ve filozof. Skolastik Aristotelesçiliği ilk terk edenlerdendir. Zihin-beden probleminin ilk modern versiyonunu formüle edip gözlem ve deneyi temel alan yeni bir bilimin gelişimine önayak olduğu için modern felsefenin babası olarak anılır.

İlk kez 1637’de yazarının adı yer almaksızın yayımlanan Yöntem Üzerine Konuşma, Descartes’ın geçmişinin muhasebesini yaptığı bir otobiyografi ve evrensel bilim projesinin girişini oluşturan bir felsefe ve bilim eseridir. Otoritelerden ve algılardan geldikleri için apaçıkmış gibi görünen bütün bilgileri yöntemsel şüpheye tabi tutarak bilim için sarsılmaz bir temel aramış ve bunu ilk kez Yöntem Üzerine Konuşma’da Fransızca ifade edilen “düşünüyorum, öyleyse varım” formülünde bulmuştur. Tasavvur ettiği dünya karşısında bilen özne üzerine dayanan bilim sistemini özetleyen bu formül daha çok Latince çevirisiyle “Cogito, ergo sum” diye bilinir.

Murat Erşen (1976): Strasbourg Marc Bloch ve Galatasaray üniversitelerinde felsefe okudu. Çeşitli üniversitelerde misafir öğretim görevlisi olarak dersler verdi. Hâlen Lyon 3 Üniversitesi’nde siyaset felsefesi alanında doktora çalışmasını sürdürüyor. Özellikle felsefe alanında Fransızca ve İngilizceden çeviriler yapıyor. Aralarında Alain Badiou, Jacques Lacan, Leo Strauss, Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Rancière, Oscar Wilde, Lars Svendsen’in eserlerinin yer aldığı pek çok kitap ve makaleyi Türkçeye kazandırdı.

Ruhun Tutkuları Descartes’ın sağlığında yayımlanmasına izin verdiği dört eserin sonuncusudur. Ölümünden bir yıl önce Fransızca olarak yayımladığı bu inceleme filozofun bir nevi “vasiyet”i ve bütün felsefesinin meyvesidir. Descartes’ın kendi deyişiyle bu “küçük inceleme” kartezyen felsefenin farklı bölümlerine ait unsurları birbirine eklemlemesi ve bunları terkip etmesiyle özel bir yere sahiptir. İstencin özgürlüğü ve genel olarak ruh ve beden işlevlerinin ayrımını söz konusu etmesiyle metafizik ile psiko-fizyolojik bir bilime dayalı ahlakın kesişiminde yer alır.

Descartes is most often thought of as introducing a total separation of mind and body. But he also acknowledged the intimate union between them, and in his later writings he concentrated on understanding this aspect of human nature. The Passions of the Soul is his greatest contribution to this debate. It contains a profound discussion of the workings of the emotions and of their place in human life - a subject that increasingly engages the interest of philosophers and intellectual and cultural historians. It also sets out a view of ethics that has been seen as a radical reorientation of moral philosophy.

This volume also includes both sides of the correspondence with Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, one of Descartes's keenest disciples and shrewdest critics, which played a crucial role in the genesis of The Passions, as well as the first part of The Principles of Philosophy, which sets out the key positions of Descartes's philosophical system.

In Descartes's Meditations, one of the key texts of Western philosophy, the thinker rejects all his former beliefs in the quest for new certainties. Discovering his own existence as a thinking entity in the very exercise of doubt, he goes on to prove the existence of God, who guarantees his clear and distinct ideas as a means of access to the truth. He develops new conceptions of body and mind, capable of serving as foundations for the new science of nature. Subsequent philosophy has grappled with Descartes's legacy, questioning many of its conclusions and even his basic approach, but his arguments set the agenda for many of the greatest philosophical thinkers, and their fascination endures.

This new translation includes the Third and Fourth Objections and Replies in full, and a selection from the rest of these exchanges with Descartes's contemporaries that helped to expound his philosophy.

Descartes's A Discourse on the Method of Correctly Conducting One's Reason and Seeking Truth in the Sciences marks a watershed in European thought; in it, the author provides an informal intellectual autobiography in the vernacular for a non-specialist readership, sweeps away all previous philosophical traditions, and sets out in brief his radical new philosophy, which begins with a proof of the existence of the self (the famous 'cogito ergo sum'), next deduces from it the existence and nature of God, and ends by offering a radical new account of the physical world and of human and animal nature.

This new translation is accompanied by a substantial introductory essay which draws on Descartes's correspondence to examine his motivation and the impact of his great work on his contemporaries. Detailed notes explain his philosophical terminology and ideas.
