Hayri Irdal, le personnage principal de ce livre est l’un des premiers antihéros de la littérature turque. Il traverse ici la fin de l’Empire Ottoman et les premières années de la République comme un somnambule, un fétu de paille voguant au gré des aspirations de son entourage.

Embauché par un drôle de bonhomme ayant fondé un institut de réglage des montres et des horloges, il va tenter de dénoncer, à sa manière, l’absurdité de la bureaucratie qui finit par totalement paralyser le pays, les idées, la pensée.

Mais serait-ce bien sérieux – alors que l’époque ne fait pas encore la part belle à la science, de se fier à ces drôles d’inventions sensées mesurer l’avancement du temps et celui de l’instant telles les métaphores d’une modernité espérée, serait-il sérieux de se fier aux dires de ce petit homme dont la condition mentale est aussi relative que le bon fonctionnement d’une horloge…

Dans ce roman se situant entre 1830 et 1950, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar parvient à évoquer le passage de l’ancien au nouveau avec une ironie souveraine et l’œil d’un horloger connaissant les rouages d’une société bouleversée de haut en bas, tremblant sur sa base sans jamais s’effondrer.

Un roman sur le temps, une satire de la société turque. Un défilé de personnages hauts en couleurs, magiciens, psychanalystes et autres saltimbanques.

En 1942, à Istanbul, un homme découvre dans son jardin une jeune femme. Sous la pluie, telle une apparition, elle est immobile près d'un arbre.
