This is yet another of King's works absolutely coted in his liberal agenda.
This novella tells the story of a man in his elderly age faced with sudden uncontrollable supernatural bodily effect on the one hand and on the other hand with his struggles to keep being integrated into his town and neighborhood the best he can.
And the main thought I had going through the novella was "It is an embarrassment for everyone depicted!" The clichés are through the roof! The grumpy aging protagonist, the lesbian overachieving strong woman, the intolerant whispering town folk. The protagonist gets himself involved where he shouldn't. The key supporting character carries herself like an overcompensating teenager. Her partner is a typical shallow victim character. The way the plot progresses is, again, embarrassing for everyone. Because the way the fantastical element gets used by the protagonist to "aid" the key supporting character is degrading to her! She ends up on top because of some magical old guy's pity move! Maybe that is the way modern male feminists in the West think a man should act, but to me it spells a slap in the face for the female. And don't get me started on the pity fest in the final third of the novella, I mean, my God! ...
To conclude this short review, in my opinion, this in nothing but a heavily politicized piece by an author who had yet another episode of not being able to contain his political views within his own head and conscience and had to spill it out for the rest of us to see. Stephen King does this occasionally. I see his political affiliation peeking out here and there in his other works. But they are jam-packed in this novella.
