It is much less a horror story and much more a book about grieving and dealing with loss. It builds slowly to an all-encompassing feeling of deep sadness.

For me, the horror part of the story was actually somewhat distracting, discordant to the sadness, loss, and grieving. It kinda feels that I might have enjoyed the book more if it was one or the other.

One of the things I loved most is

(slight spoiler ahead)
how Miri's story is basically centered around letting go of Leah, and Leah story is a lot about getting back to Miri - and the tragedy of it is heartbreaking.
