The last 60 years have witnessed an unbelievable amount of change in restorative dentistry. To examine the present stage of the restorations development requires an appreciation of the allied sciences which have contributed and continue to contribute to its evolution. Physics, chemistry, engineering and the material sciences have all helped to rationalize our approach to metal ceramic restorations. The laws and principles of these allied sciences have greatly aided the quest for predictability. The unsurpassed aesthetic, mechanical and biocompatible qualities of metal ceramic restorations still provide the stimulus to seek methods to overcome their minimal limitations. This text book outlines some interesting aspects of recent developments and considers the present state of the art with respect to both materials and techniques for metal ceramic restorations. -

Impression materials too have gone through a tremendous phase of development. From olden day clay, to wax to the modern day elastomers, they have indeed not only improved the quality of the impression but also directly influenced the technique used to manipulate these materials during impression making. Many a times both the impression technique as well as the materials have complemented each other in producing an accurate impression incorporating all principles for an ideal impression making. -

"Humanity has but three great enemies: fever, famine & war; of these by far the greatest, by far the most terrible, is fever." William Osler . It can be concluded from the present study that ict malaria pf/pv is an easy and rapid test, sensitive and specific, does not require electricity or equipment, required only small amount of unprocessed blood and which can be for performed in opd, clinics and even at phc level within 10 minutes. Our results suggest that ict malaria pf/pv for detecting malaria in blood may prove to be an important tool in the battle against malaria. further more, ?-? arteether is better that quinine in term of rapid coma resolution, fever clearance, parasite clearance, well tolerability, more rapid schizonticidal activity than quinine, simpler to administer, almost equivalent in overall cost to quinine and also has no side effects. -

Water is essential to all known life forms and is required for hydration to sustain health, sanitation needs, as a solvent to wash everday items, for industrial applications and as a thermal transfer agent, among others. Inadequate water treatment has a significant and devastating impact on public on health. Worldwide, lack access to safe drinking water, and twice that many lack adequate sanitation. -

Book describes the basic techniques that are used in molecular biology. These techniques includes various DNA manipulation techniques, cloning and bacterial growth. This book also describes the Green Fluorescent Gene, one of the novel achievements in the field of science. The reason for writing this book is that in our graduation and post graduation we heard about various molecular biology techniques but we know very little about these techniques. And even we know the techniques we are not much aware about the principle and the protocols of the techniques. I am writing this book for the graduate and post graduate students who want to know basic molecular techniques and also their protocols so that they can use it in their laboratory doing their work. Many researchers can also get help from this book. -

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases affecting women worldwide. Studies on loss of heterozygosity have been made for PTEN gene specific microsatellite markers in malignancies like breast, ovary and lungs and the results have shown a significant association. However the role of this gene is not clearly understood in cervical cancer from Indian population. A total of 135 cervical carcinoma tissues samples were analyzed for loss of heterozygosity. DNA was isolated from the samples and their matched control specimens. Polymerase chain reaction was performed using primer specific for two intragenic markers and one marker in flanking region and further electrophoresed on 8% denaturing polyacrylamide gel. Overall, 31 out of 133(23%) informative cases showed loss of heterozygosity in at least one locus in the region examined. The percentage of loss of heterozygosity for these markers ranged from 8% to 13%. Loss of heterozygosity was more frequently detected in intragenic region than in flanking region. -

There is increasing involvement of private parties - both for-profit and non-profit, for providing public services mainly due to the rolling back of the state almost all over the world. The nonprofit or voluntary sector and the state had always been observed to have a love & hate relationship and there is qualm about collaboration. This book throws light on the dynamics of shifting relationship between the nonprofit sector and the state in the contemporary world, in the light of considerable research & analytical work available on the subject. The book raises questions like: ‘In the process of coming too close to the donors and away from the grassroots, are NGOs losing some of their qualities for which they were thought to be better performers than the state?’ The subject of evolving relationship between the state and the nonprofit sector would appeal to a large number of social scientists, activists and practitioners. -

The discovery of green fluorescent protein and cloning of its gene from Aequorea victoria heralded a new era of investigation in virtually every field of cell and molecular biology ranging from the study of gene expression to protein sorting, organelle structure, measurement of protein-protein interaction, and so on.Before GFP, however several other fluorescent molecules has been in use but none of them could be as potential as GFP. What makes GFP so significant is its ability to fluoresces itself once formed in comparison of other bioluminescent molecules (such as aequorin and firefly luciferase) which require the addition of other substrate before they glow. Further, it is a small protein and can be attached to the protein of interest without disturbing its proper function. Also its small size allows following the fused protein, especially in organelles like neurons. -

The study was conducted at JNMC, Aligarh, India. To discern the obstacles/hurdles that stood in the way of the patients and the high technology diagnostic tool. For this purpose several parameters were taken, as education, literacy, occupation, income group etc. 97% chose to undergo USG and only 3% were defaulters. 86% chose to undergo CT scan and only 14% were defaulters. 79% chose to undergo MRI and 21% were defaulters. Low cost investigation i.e. USG & CT scan were more prescribed to IVth social class but MRI was mostly prescribed to IInd. Most of the defaulters were from IVth social class and showed financial problem for getting. Taking into consideration the cost and sensitivity of procedure it was found that mainly cost determine the outcome. Sensitivity did not matter in patient''s perspective. This was the reason that maximum defaulters were found in MRI, followed by CT scan and least in USG. Financial constraint was primary reason declared by defaulters followed by distance. Additional parameters like literacy, occupation and social standing were also found significant in the study in the sense of prescription of investigation and being defaulter.
