In okra, a number of varieties have been developed which possess resistance to Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV). Little attention has been given to breed varieties resistant to shoot and fruit borer, which is one of the serious insect- pests and causes 41.60 per cent losses in different parts of India. However, according to earlier workers, Earias species infestation may reach as high as 60.68 per cent. Further, control strategies for this pest are exclusively based on the chemicals that are harmful in view of frequent harvesting of fruits (2-3 times a week). The injudicious use of pesticides for controlling the pest also poses serious health problems by polluting the environment. Development of resistant/tolerant varieties/hybrids against the pest appears to be eco-friendly and the safest viable alternative.Therefore, ten highly/ fairly resistant and less susceptible genotypes found under natural infestation conditions were used as females in line x tester mating design. Among various genotypes EC-169513, EC-329424 and EC-7194 were identified as highly resistant against shoot and fruit borer and can further be utilized in resistant breeding programme after confirming the resistance

At present, cytomorphological studies have been carried out on 355 populations of 190 species belonging to 86 genera pertaining to 22 families of polypetalous group of Dicots. The intensive observations have been made on the members collected from different localities covering the wide altitudinal range. In all, new/varied chromosomal number reports are made for total of 58 species. Seven species have been cytologically worked out for the first time at world level. Similarly, new intraspecific cytotypes have been recorded for 25 species on world-wide basis. Three species are reported with B-chromosomes for the first time. From India, 15 species are cytologically worked out for the first time and 8 species are reported for new intraspecific cytotypes. Morphological variations are seen on the basis of flower colour in four species, as noted for Anemone obtusiloba, Astragalus chlorostachys, Geranium wallichianum and Meconopsis aculeata. Seven species exhibit intraspecific variability in the form of cytotypes with different chromosome numbers, also showing notable changes in some of the morphological characters of such plants, e.g. Agrimonia eupatoria, Bupleurum lanceolatum, Geum royle

The present study entitled “Tree-crop interaction studies in Plum (Prunus domestica L.) Based Agroforestry System in Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh” have revealed that field crop performed poorly under agrihorticulture system in comparison to pure crops. The studies have further indicated that plum compete strongly with maize for moisture, nutrients and other resources. Plum suppressed crop growth and productivity significantly on north side and closer distance from the tree row. It is further deduced from the studies that soil fertility status was higher under agrihorticulture system than sole cropping. Nutrient availability was more at closer distance. The effect of direction on available nutrients was statistically non-significant. Addition of nutrients was found higher in agrihorticulture system than sole cropping. The removal of nutrients from different harvested components was higher in agrihorticulture system than sole cropping. Among nutrient elements studied the pattern of removal was: N > K > P. The phosphorus was depleted more in both the systems and showed net loss whereas; N and K have shown net gain.

This book is useful for the researchers, scholars working on the linseed in universities/Institutes/Centres. The genotypes used in the present investigation were found to have high fatty acid content (?-Linolenic-acid). Higher amount of linolenic acid in the experimental material shows its unsuitability for edible purpose but suggests its usefulness for industrial purposes. Of the 60 RAPD primers used in the present studies for identification of molecular markers linked to the wilt disease, only 12 primers were polymorphic but did not generate polymorphism among the bulks. Hence, proposed primers used in the present study were not useful and more random primers should be used to identify markers linked to the disease in future breeding programme.

It covers the breeding aspects of under utilized pulse crop – Rice bean (Vigna umbellata (Thunb) Ohwi and Ohashi) and explains the nature and magnitude of variation of growth parameters and yield system traits of different rice bean genotypes for monoculture and intercropping with maize. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of bio-fertilizers and foliar spray of urea on yield and quality of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) during 2007-08 at the R.A.K. College of Agriculture, Sehore,M.P.,India under the microbiology discipline of AICRP on Chickpea. The experiment was laid out in a RBD with 4 replications and 7 treatments in Vertisol low in available N, medium in P and high in K with pH 7.8. Various growth and yield attributing characters to support seed and straw yield, N and P uptake by crop and also N, P, K balance in soil after harvest of crop were studied. It is concluded from the study that the treatments 20 kg N/ ha + Rhizobium + PSB + PGPR, Rhizobium + PSB + PGPR+2 % urea spray and 20 kg N/ ha + Rhizobium + PSB + PGPR + 2 % urea spray were at par on statistical basis but on the basis of economics- application of 20 kg N/ ha + Rhizobium + PSB + PGPR + 2% urea spray(at flowering & 10 days thereafter) proved favorable in enhancing the growth and yield attributing characters, seed and straw yield, N and P uptake, crude protein in seed, N balance in soil and producing the highest net return in the chickpea cultivation under rain fed conditions.

This specialist book investigates issues related with remote monitoring of EKG signals over commercial wireless sensor networks under various network conditions. The popular wireless sensor networks with default configurations were found to be unable to support transmission of a good quality EKG signal. To improve the quality of EKG signals over the wireless sensors, some open source solutions were tested to improve end-to-end transmission and remote display of the EKG signal. The customized solution comprised of an open source application namely OscilloscopeRF for collecting and sending EKG signals from the remote patient's location over wireless sensors. Two other applications called Oscilloscope GUI and Serial-Forwarder were tested for displaying good quality EKG signals on the remote computer. To further stress test the system, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack conditions were created in the network environment to study the effect DDoS vulnerabilities on the collected EKG signals. The silent DDoS attack conditions in the network were found to alter the collected EKG signals, making it appear falsly as if the patient was having abnormal heart rhythms.

The present investigation was carried out at SKUAST of Jammu, India, with the objective of getting information on suitable method of seed production and dates of transplanting under subtropical conditions of Jammu, during 2009–10. Two methods of seed production (insitu and exsitu) and three dates of transplanting (1st October, 15th October and 30th October) making 6 treatment combinations were replicated 4 times in RBD (factorial). The studies revealed that insitu method of seed production significantly influenced most of the traits. 1st October transplanting proved significantly superior to all the characters except for days to 50% bolting and days to 50% flowering. The interaction effect of method of seed production and dates of transplanting showed that treatment combination M1D1 (insitu method of seed production x 1st October transplanting date) significantly influenced plant height, days to seed maturity, number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield per plant. It can be concluded that insitu method of seed production and 1st October transplanting showed better performance for maximum characters, whereas M1D1 combination proved best of all other interaction effects.

Study was carried out at Palampur and Bajaura in India.7 lines, 4 testers & their 28 hybrids were evaluated in RBD with 3 replications in line x tester mating design. ANOVA revealed significant differences among genotypes and GxE interactions, the line x tester analysis revealed significant differences due to line x location, tester x location & line x tester x location interactions (tested against error mean squares) at both locations and pooled analysis for most of the traits. GCA effects revealed that the lines BT-18 and Rodade and tester Hawaii-7998 and EC-392698 at Palampur;lines BL-333 and CLN-2123 and testers EC- 191536 and EC-392698 at Bajaura were good general combiners for yield and its contributing traits. However, BT-18 and BL-333 among lines and EC-392698 and Hawaii-7998 among testers were good general combiners for maximum traits studied in over all pooled analysis. Based on combing ability, heterosis and mean performance, crosses BT- 18xHawaii-7998, RodadexEC-392698 and BL-333xEC- 191536 in overall pooled analysis had great promise for further exploration. Preponderance of non additive gene action was fond in most of the traits.
