Professor Gregg Crane is Associate Professor, Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan. He received a Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

In terms of its allusions, Melville’s whale story can seem a veritable compendium of Western culture, calling to mind Perseus, Prometheus, Odysseus, Job, Jonah, Hamlet, Lear, Goethe’s Faust, Byron’s Childe Harold, Montaigne’s cannibals, Coleridge’s ancient mariner, and Turner’s seascapes.

Хороший, очень качественный экскурс в историю американской литературы 19 века.

Исторические и сентиментальные романы, романы философские и сенсационные, зарождение реализма. Такие разные, и такие замечательные писатели - По, Мелвилл, Готорн, Бичер Стоу, Марк Твен, Генри Джеймс и многие другие.

И, конечно, гораздо менее известные писатели и писательницы, но важные для понимания путей развития американской литературы и истории становления жанров.
