  • Globalization and Its Discontents Joseph E. Stiglitz

Due to massive media coverage, many people are familiar with the controversy and organized resistance that globalization has generated around the world, yet explaining what globalization actually means in practice is a complicated task. For those wanting to learn more, this book is an excellent place to start. An experienced economist, Joseph Stiglitz had a brilliant career in academia before serving for four years on President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors and then three years as chief economist and senior vice president of the World Bank. His book clearly explains the functions and powers of the main institutions that govern globalization--the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization--along with the ramifications, both good and bad, of their policies. He strongly believes that globalization can be a positive force around the world, particularly for the poor, but only if the IMF, World Bank, and WTO dramatically alter the way they operate, beginning with increased transparency and a greater willingness to examine their own actions closely. Of his time at the World Bank, he writes, "Decisions were made on the basis of what seemed a curious blend of ideology and bad economics, dogma that sometimes seemed to be thinly veiling special interests.... Open, frank discussion was discouraged--there was no room for it." The book is not entirely critical, however: "Those who vilify globalization too often overlook its benefits," Stiglitz writes, explaining how globalization, along with foreign aid, has improved the living standards of millions around the world. With this clear and balanced book, Stiglitz has contributed significantly to the debate on this important topic.
  • Global city Saskia Sassen
    ISBN: 9780691070636
    Год издания: 2001
    Издательство: Princeton
    Язык: Английский
This classic work chronicles how New York, London, and Tokyo became command centers for the global economy and in the process underwent a series of massive and parallel changes. What distinguishes Sassen's theoretical framework is the emphasis on the formation of cross-border dynamics through which these cities and the growing number of other global cities begin to form strategic transnational networks. All the core data in this new edition have been updated, while the preface and epilogue discuss the relevant trends in globalization since the book originally came out in 1991.
  • Cities at War: Global Insecurity and Urban Resistance Саския Сассен
    ISBN: 978-0231185394
    Год издания: 2020
    Издательство: Columbia University Press
Warfare in the twenty-first century goes well beyond conventional armies and nation-states. In a world of diffuse conflicts taking place across sprawling cities, war has become fragmented and uneven to match its settings. Yet the analysis of failed states, civil war, and state building rarely considers the city, rather than the country, as the terrain of battle. In Cities at War, Mary Kaldor and Saskia Sassen assemble an international team of scholars to examine cities as sites of contemporary warfare and insecurity. Reflecting Kaldor's expertise on security cultures and Sassen's perspective on cities and their geographies, they develop new insight into how cities and their residents encounter instability and conflict, as well as the ways in which urban forms provide possibilities for countering violence. Through a series of case studies of cities including Baghdad, Bogotá, Ciudad Juarez, Kabul, and Karachi, the book reveals the unequal distribution of insecurity as well as how urban capabilities might offer resistance and hope. Through analyses of how contemporary forms of identity, inequality, and segregation interact with the built environment,Cities at War explains why and how political violence has become increasingly urbanized. It also points toward the capacity of the city to shape a different kind of urban subjectivity that can serve as a foundation for a more peaceful and equitable future.

  • Power: Producing the Contemporary City Lieven De Cauter
    ISBN: 978-9056625795
    Год издания: 2007
    Издательство: nai010 publishers
Never before have so many people lived in an urban environment: More than half the world's current population does, and that number is expected to rise to two-thirds by 2050. The contemporary city is the arena where all of the diverse forms of power and the far-reaching impacts of globalization must interact. This situation confronts us with issues that are more urgent than ever before: What is the contemporary city? Who and what "produces" it? Which forces steer its development? What is the potential role of the architect?

This volume draws together research about the foundations of the contemporary city; discusses forces that have a bearing on its development; formulates the challenges for today's architects and urban planners; and presents strategies with which they can operate in the midst of this interplay of forces, on the basis of topical, coherent visions for the twenty-first century city.
  • A Sociology of Globalization (Contemporary Societies Series) Saskia Sassen
    ISBN: 0393927261, 978-0393927269
    Год издания: 2007
    Издательство: W. W. Norton & Company
    Язык: Английский
This groundbreaking study focuses on the importance of place, scale, and nation to the study of globalization.

Sassen identifies two sets of processes that make up globalization: the first and more commonly studied set of processes is global institutions, from the World Trade Organization to the War Crime Tribunals; the second and less frequently explored set of processes occur at the national and local level, including state monetary policy, small-scale activism that has an explicit or implicit global agenda, and local politics. Emphasizing the interplay between global and local phenomena, Sassen insightfully examines new forms and conditions such as global cities, transnational communities, and commodity chains. This unique approach to globalization offers new interpretive and analytic tools to understand the complexity of global interdependence. Sociology of Globalization is part of the Contemporary Societies series.
  • Global Networks, Linked Cities Saskia Sassen
    ISBN: 0415931630
    Год издания: 2002
    Издательство: Routledge
    Язык: Английский
In her pioneering book "The Global City", Saskia Sassen argued that certain cities in the postindustrial world have become central nodes in the new service economy, strategic sites for the acceleration of capital and information flows as well as spaces of increasing socio-economic polarization. One effect has been that such cities have gained in importance and power relative to nation-states.
In this new collection of essays, Sassen and a distinguished group of contributors expand on the author's earlier work in a number of important ways, focusing on two key issues. First, they look at how information flows have bound global cities together in networks, creating a global city web whose constituent cities become "global" through the networks they participate in. Second, they investigate emerging global cities in the developing world - Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Beirut, the Dubai-Iran corridor, and Buenos Aires. They show how these globalizing zones are not only replicating many featuresof the top tier of global cities, but are also generating new socio-economic patterns as well. These new patterns of development promise to lead to significant changes in the structure of the global economy, as more and more cities worldwide are integrated into globalization's circuitry.

  • Guests and Aliens Saskia Sassen
    ISBN: 1565846087
    Год издания: 2000
    Издательство: New Press
A penetrating analysis of the history of migration and refugees, from a leading expert in the field. Guests and Aliens presents a comprehensive analysis of worldwide immigration by one of the world's leading experts on globalization. Putting the current "crisis" of immigration into a historical context for the first time, Sassen suggests that the American experience represents only one phase in a history of global border-crossing. She describes the mass migrations of Italians and Eastern European Jews during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the international dislocations - particularly after the end of World War II--that have engendered the "refugee" concept. Using these examples, Sassen explores the causes of immigration that have resulted in nations' welcoming incomers as "guests" or disparaging them as "aliens," and outlines an "enlightened approach" (Publishers Weekly) to improving US and European immigration policies.

  • Cities in a World Economy (Sociology for a New Century) Saskia Sassen
    ISBN: 0761986669
    Язык: Английский
Cities in a World Economy presents sociologists with a new perspective on the study of urban sociology. The decentralization and privatization of the world's economies has radically altered such things as the organization of labour, the structure of consumption, and the distribution of earnings in ways that have yet to be fully realized. In a world economy that is truly more global than it has ever been, the Second Edition of this popular textbook addresses the need to account for the global economies' increasing influence on the social structures of cities.
