Set in 1853 in Japan, this novel follows Yoshi, a Japanese boy who dreams of someday becoming a samurai. Unfortunately, as part of the serving class Yoshi can never become a warrior. He is taken up by Manjiro, the protagonist of Preus’s Heart of a Samurai, and becomes his servant and secret watchdog. Meanwhile, Commodore Matthew Perry and his USS Susquehanna squadron arrive on the shores of Edo demanding “diplomatically” that Japan open its ports to foreign trade. Aboard the Susquehanna is a cabin boy, Jack, who becomes separated from his American companions while on shore. When he and Yoshi cross paths, they set out on a grand adventure to get Jack back to his ship before he is discovered by the shogun’s samurai.

Following their mother's death, Astri and Greta's father sets off from their small village in Norway for America in the hopes of making enough money to eventually send for his daughters. The girls are left in the care of their uncle and cruel aunt who soon take the opportunity to make some extra money by hiring out Astri to the local goatherder. The goatherder is an unforgiving and hard master, requiring Astri to work long hours at grueling tasks with only a corner of the living room as a place to sleep. Left primarily to her own devices, Astri has only her imagination and the stories of her father to keep her company. Soon, however, Astri discovers that she is not the only girl the goatherder has hidden away—the other girl is simple and mute, but can spin almost anything. Together with the "Spinning Girl," Astri runs away to her aunt and uncle's farm where they fetch Greta and set off on an adventure to America, which will take them east of the sun and west of the moon.

Shadow on the Mountain is about the adventures of a Norwegian boy during World War Two. After Nazi Germany invades and occupies Norway, Espen and his friends are swept up in the Norwegian resistance movement. Fourteen-year old Espen gets his start by delivering underground (and illegal) newspapers, graduates to the role of courier and finally becomes a spy, dodging the Gestapo along the way. During five years under the Nazi fist, he gains—and loses—friends, falls in love and makes one small mistake that threatens to catch up with him, even as he sets out to escape over the mountains to Sweden on skis. The story is based on the real life adventures of Norwegian Erling Storrusten whom author Preus (of Norwegian ancestry) interviewed in Norway. Most of the experiences that young Espen undertakes are based on those of Mr. Storrusten.

A Japanese fishing vessel in 1841 sinks and its crew swims to a small unknown island to be rescued by a passing American ship. At the time, the Japanese borders were closed to all western nations so the Japanese sailors are frightened of their captors. They cannot return to Japan because the western ship will not be allowed into port, and even if it was, the fishing crew would end up in prison (or even put to death) as associates of the west. So the crew goes off to America with the western ship, learning English on the way. Our hero is Manjiro, a 14 year old boy, who is very curious and learns everything he can about this new culture. He ends up being adopted by the captain of the western ship and lives for a time in New England. Then he heads to San Francisco to pan for gold, but eventually he makes his way back to Japan where at first he is imprisoned, but then later helps the emperor to lower the wall around Japan. The emperor calls him a samurai, which had always been the boy's dream.
