The Doctor has been staying on the planet Hitchemus for the past few months where he has been learning to play the violin from gifted young composer Karl Hassan. Hitchemus is a planet with two distinctive features -- the humans who live there have a formidable reputation for composing, playing and appreciating a wide range of music -- while its tiger population is showing unusual signs of intelligence.Although Anji is greatly unnerved by the sight of a tiger taking a book out of a library, no one is prepared for the day when the tigers take over the planet. Their demands are unusual though -- they want to be taught to play instruments as well as the humans, and to this end kidnap all of the planet's most eminent musicians.

Why are these tigers so intellectually advanced, and can the population of Hitchemus resolve their conflict to avoid civil war? The Doctor sympathises with the tigers and humans alike, but needs to help both parties to resolve their differences before they both begin to see him as a traitor...

Sam is homeless on the streets of the colony world of Ha’olam, trying to face what’s just happened between her and the Doctor. He’s searching for her, and for answers. The Doctor and Chris travel to sixteen-century Japan, a country gripped by civil war as feudal lords vie for control. Anything could tip the balance of power. So when a god falls out of the sky, everyone wants it.

As villagers are healed and crops grow far too fast, the Doctor and Chris try to find the secret of the miracles -- before the two rival armies can start a war over who owns the god. She manages to find employment as a nobleman's bodyguard. And then she comes face to face with the metal horrors which have pursued her through time — the creatures she saw kill the Doctor.

In ancient Akrotiri, a young girl is learning mysteries from a tutor who, quite literally, fell from the skies. With his encouragement, she can fly and surf the timestreams and see something of the future. But then the demons come. Death and disaster are meted out by the gods of her land. Perhaps retribution for some heinous crime... or something far more sinister?

'Stay the hell out of my mind,' hissed Forrester. 'Just stay away from me.' She turned and stalked out of the room.
Chris put his head in his hands.

The Earth colony on Yemaya 4 is a very ordinary place. The colonists spend their time farming, building homes, raising families.

But when the Doctor and his companions arrive they find a virus sweeping through the population, unleashing the colonists' latent psychic powers. The Doctor and Chris fall prey to the infection, and discover telepathy is not the only symptom. Chris is unable to resist the call of an ancient place of sacrifice, while Roz and Benny travel back in time to the origin of the virus, and uncover a desperate bid for immortality.

And all the while the Doctor is playing a dangerous game with troopers of the Dione-Kisumu company, who have come either to reclaim the stolen biotechnology — or to sterilize the planet.
