Peter Haining The Mammoth Book of True Ha...
ISBN: 978-1845296889 Год издания: 2008 Издательство: Robinson Аннотация
This giant collection includes a huge range of 20th-century first-hand accounts of hauntings, such as the American troops who repeatedly saw the ghosts of a dead platoon of men while on patrol in Vietnam; and the witnessed haunting of a house near Tintagel in Cornwall that led actress Kate Winslet to pull out of buying the property. It covers the full spectrum of credible hauntings, from poltergeists (the noisy, dangerous and frightening spirits that are usually associated with pubescent girls, like the Bell Witch), to phantoms (like the Afrits of Saudi Arabia) and seduction spirits (such as the Lorelei, which have lured German men to death). Also included are the notes of the most famous ghost hunters of the twentieth century such as Hans Holzer, Susy Smith (USA); Harry Price, Jenny Randles (UK); Joyce Zwarycz (Australia), Eric Rosenthal (South Africa), and Hwee Tan (Japan). Plus essays by such names as Robert Graves, Edgar Cayce, and M. R. James outlining their own often extraordinary conclusions as to just what ghosts might be; along with a full bibliography and list of useful resources. In addition, a top ranking list of contributors includes Stephen King, Bram Stoker, Ruth Rendell, and James Herbert--all brought together by an anthologist who himself lives in a haunted house. -

Peter Haining Doctor Who: 25 Glorious Years
ISBN: 1-85227-021-7 Год издания: 1988 Издательство: W. H. Allen Ltd. Язык: Английский Аннотация
This is the official Doctor Who 25th anniversary book, marking 25 years of BBC television's longest running and most successful science fiction series. From its very beginnings as a 25-minute black-and-white Saturday evening television series for children, Doctor Who has become a national institution and an international success story. With over 110 million viewers in 60 countries, the programme's popularity is almost unparalleled in the history of entertainment.
When viewed against the background of competing shows on British TV during the past 25 years — particularly the various American series which have been screened — Doctor Who stands out as a trail-blazer of astonishing originality. Its strength has been in its flexibility, for it is not only the Doctor who has changed over the years, but also the companions, the producers and the scriptwriters who have put together what has become a very complex and highly technical series.
In this book, Peter Haining draws together and analyses all the elements which have helped retain the vitality and spark of the series over a quarter of a century. John Nathan-Turner, the show's producer for the last ten years, and Sylvester McCoy, the seventh and most recent regeneration of the Doctor, discuss their views on this remarkable phenomenon and the author reviews the actors and actresses who have portrayed the Doctor Who characters in television, film and stage productions, and the ways in which they have contributed to the development of the various roles.
In its early days, the show was a pioneer in the field of TV character merchandising, and its subsequent development is unmatched in media history. Much of the souvenir memorabilia, from Dalek and Cybermen figures to TARDIS money-boxes and T-shirts, is now considered valuable by collectors. Doctor Who has also been featured in various comics over the years, and this anniversary book chronicles both the multi-million pound mechandising operation and the portrayal of the comic-strip Doctor in print.
Probably the biggest disappointment for Doctor Who fans throughout the world is that the BBC's collection of programmes is incomplete. As a result of a policy adopted by the BBC in the early seventies, a considerable number of the Doctor's early adventures were destroyed. Some of these "missing" episodes have amazingly since come to light from various sources, and Peter Haining records the loss and subsequent recovery of certain of these early episodes.
Doctor Who — 25 Glorious Years celebrates the success of a programme around which a mythology of remakable complexity has developed. The Who phenomenon is truly timeless. With a new generation of viewers meeting the Time Lord for the first time, the show could continue for many years to come.
Peter Haining has been the dubbed the "official" Doctor Who historian. He is an experienced author and journalist and has numerous bestselling Doctor Who books to his credit, including Doctor Who — The Time-Travellers' Guide, Doctor Who — A Celebration, The Doctor Who File and Doctor Who — The Key to Time. -
Peter Haining The Time-Travellers' Guide
ISBN: 0-491-03497-0 Год издания: 1987 Издательство: W. H. Allen Ltd. Язык: Английский Аннотация
In three decades of travelling through space and time, the remarkable TARDIS has taken the Doctor and his companions to some of the strangest places in the galaxy and introduced them to creatures out of their wildest nightmares.
Now, in this indispensable handbook, bestselling author Peter Haining examines the wonder of Time Travel as seen through the eyes of all the Doctors. He traces the origins of the hugely successful television programme from the literature of Time Travel in general and H.G. Wells' classic novel, The Time Machine, in particular.
He also studies the Doctor's regenerations as well as looking in detail at the Time Lord society on Gallifrey from which he comes. There is an inventory of the weird and dangerous planets the Doctor has visited, the space craft he has seen, and a comprehensive listing of the villains, monsters and robots that have crossed his path.
Peter Haining's book offers a unique insight into the dramatic events which nearly ended the programme after twenty-three years, plus details of the new seventh Doctor. Finally, it contains an update on all the adventures which have been broadcast since the author's earlier enormously successful book, Doctor Who: A Celebration. -
Peter Haining The Doctor Who File
ISBN: 0-491-03813-5 Год издания: 1986 Издательство: W. H. Allen Ltd. Язык: Английский Аннотация
More than two decades after it began, Doctor Who is now the longest running TV science fiction programme in the world, and is second only to Star Trek in terms of popularity. it is therefore hardly surprising that over the years the show has attracted some of the most talented people in television: from producers and directors, to actors and writers.
In this companion volume to his two bestselling books — Doctor Who: A Celebration and Doctor Who: The Key to Time — Peter Haining unlocks the secrets of the TARDIS memory banks and explores the history of this influential show through a series of fascinating interviews and specially comissioned articles.
From pieces on the creation of the Cybermen, the difficulties in driving a Dalek, and the Doctor Who film that never was, to features on the show's writers — including Douglas Adams who went to on to script The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy — and all six Doctors, plus the actors who were very nearly selected to play the role, The Doctor Who File is a fascinating study of a unique phenomenon. -
Peter Haining A Pictorial History of Horr...
ISBN: 1850510598 Год издания: 1985 Издательство: Treasure Library Аннотация
This book is a reprint of Haining's earlier book entitled "Terror: A History of Horror Illustrations from Pulp Magazines." It is a hardback with different cover art. While it's quite thorough in visually documenting the evolution of horror illustration from the "penny-dreadful" magazines of the Victorian age through the pulps of the '30s and '40s, most of the luridly colorful pulp magazine cover images are reproduced in B&W. Goes into interesting detail of the history of horror publishing, from England to the USA to pulps, and details some of the masters, and gives many excellent examples. Nice that it is in black and white, too, as far as horror goes. -
Peter Haining Doctor Who: Key to Time
ISBN: 0-491-03283-8 Год издания: 1984 Издательство: W. H. Allen Ltd. Язык: Английский Аннотация
Doctor Who is not just another television programme. It is a familiar and much-loved British institution that after more than twenty years continues to enjoy enormous success both at home and abroad.
The Key to Time marks the programme's coming of age — twenty-one years old on 23 November 1984. Peter Haining has adopted the novel technique of exploring the history of the series through key dates in its many life-cycles. He demonstrates — with extensive reference to files kept in the Doctor Who Production Office — how much a part of British life the programme has become, and how the impact of this extraordinary phenomenon has travelled further afield. He traces the many changes the series has undergone since the first episode was broadcast in November 1963 — not only in terms of regenerated Doctors but also new methods of programme-making. The beginning of the Jon Pertwee era coincided with the switchover from black-and-white to colour, but Peter Haining also gives details of how many of the special effects were achieved, and how this initially modest television series pioneered techniques used in the multi-million-dollar Star Wars.
The enthusiastic support of viewers all over the world has contributed to Doctor Who's long and happy life, and The Key to Time includes tributes from fans in Britain, Australia, Canada and the United States, in the form of drawings and sketches inspired by the series.
This extensively illustrated special publication, with twenty-four pages of colour photographs, is a superb follow-up to the runaway success of W.H. Allen's Doctor Who: A Celebration. -
