After Black spent weeks imprisoned and tortured by the evil vampire, “Brick,” Miriam is still dealing with the fallout of her husband’s nightmares and strange silences. When Black asks her to accompany him to New York for an extended business trip, Miri quickly agrees, but before they can leave, Brick ambushes them yet again.

This time, it’s Miri he wants.

Taken by Brick, she’s positive he’s using her as bait to lure her husband. But it turns out Brick wants her for an entirely different purpose, to act as psychic psychologist to his vampire girlfriend, Lila, who is suffering from trauma of her own.

Forced to work for a creature she despises, Miri finds herself drawn into his personal life in a way she never could have imagined or wanted, even as she fights to stay alive.

I thought I knew what angry looked like on Black before all this. I didn’t.

Black takes Miri with him to New York.

There, he thrusts her into a world of Wall Street, talk shows, fancy dinner parties with rich douchebags, and being hounded by paparazzi.

Although he’s playing the part of smirking Wall Street pirate, all of this is camouflage for his new business venture––which, as far as Miri can tell, consists of hunting down and killing every vampire in existence on Earth.

Mostly, however, Black wants Brick.

He flat-out won’t stop until he’s cut the head or heart from the vampire king who put him in that prison in Louisiana.

Alarmed by the changes she sees in him, Miri grows increasingly worried at the lengths he’s willing to go to exact his revenge.

When a series of terrorist attacks appear to have Black at their center, she starts to wonder who is hunting whom, whether Black is baiting the vampires into a confrontation or Brick is manipulating him once again for his own twisted purposes.

Black finds himself out in the New Mexico desert, where an old war buddy of his needs his help with a rash of murders plaguing his small reservation town.

At first it appears to be a pretty cut and dried case of supernatural infestation.

When it turns out that infestation is being orchestrated by a banished and fanatical shaman, however, things start to get weird fast.

Black, who only went out there to forget his marriage problems and distract himself with some good, honest work, soon finds himself face to face with his worst fears from his past.

He needs Miri out there to help him, but when he finally convinces her to come, things only spiral even faster out of control, drawing them into an ancient, apocalyptic force that might tear them apart forever.

Black gave him a look. “No. But all my other ideas were worse.”

A coup is underway.

That coup threatens the entire United States––possibly the whole of the human race.

Psychic detective, Quentin Black, has no idea who’s behind it, what their goal is, or what they want with him. After the funeral of one of his oldest friends, he finds himself on the run from the very people he used to work for in the Pentagon.

With his wife, Miri, he’s forced to flee the country, then to seek allies in the most unlikely of quarters to try and clear his name.

Together, they return to the center of the conspiracy, Washington D.C., and face the architect of what might be a terrifying new world.

“He’s just like his cousin,” the seer grunted. “Sh*t followed him everywhere, too. No matter where he went, there it was.”

Black and Miri go to Thailand, to Black’s private resort on the island of Koh Mangaan. There, they find themselves running a quasi-refugee center for seers fleeing Lucky Lucifer, otherwise known as Miri’s Uncle Charles.

Black also gives Miri an ultimatum––right as Thai Park Rangers ask for Black’s help finding two missing tourists from Bangkok, who vanish in the wild, mountainous national park that takes up half the island.

The rangers worry the other inhabitants of the island might be involved––a group of strange foreigners who’ve lived on the island for decades, feral humans calling themselves the Nachtsonne, or “Night Sun.”

Black sends a team to help, but soon the search team goes missing––and Nick, Angel, Cowboy, Dex and Jem with them.

Worse, a new force seems to have awakened on the island––a force somehow connected to Black himself. When Black and Miri’s friends remain missing, it becomes clear the danger is real, and Black must face the mountain and the Nachtsonne himself.

In the process, he’ll call upon the least-likely person imaginable for help.

After that mess on the Thai island of Koh Mangaan, Miri and Black search for Nick all over Europe, following every lead, every rumor or trail they can run down.

Those footsteps are rapidly fading, though.

Miri has to face facts.

Nick is probably dead.

Whether the vampires killed him, or he died in that fire on Koh Mangaan, she might never know.

She and Black return to the United States, back to San Francisco, back to the reality of her Uncle Charles and the civil war he’s brought to American soil.

Charles wants nothing more than to wipe out the vampire race, and he’s willing to enslave or kill every human on the planet to do it.

As his newly-founded “Purity Movement” starts riots in several states, the unrest moves closer to Black and Miri, even as Charles continues to pressure them to join the war on his side.

The vampires are worried about Charles, too––so worried, their king contacts Black, wanting an alliance. In return, he promises news on Nick.

It’s an offer Miri can’t refuse.

When Miri’s dreams start following her back to the real world, scaring the hell out of her husband, military-trained seer, Quentin Black, he decides to take matters into his own hands and follow her in, whatever it takes.

The vampire race is massing, preparing for all-out war.

Meanwhile, riots rage, and Charles, the seer who decided to take over the planet from the human race, is locking down the country, preparing for that final confrontation.

Both sides want Black with them. Both sides want to control him.

When Black’s wife goes missing, that’s the last damned straw.

When he finally loses his cool, the whole world may pay the price.
