The whole time reading I had this feeling of things being rather goofy, cartoonish, ridiculous: the MC being all hero-y, the reason she ran, her boss, the concept behind the spaceship, Karl, his boss, etc. Yet the book itself took everything way too seriously, and this felt really jarring. It really seemed to me the story could have worked if there was some humor and silliness in it.
The parts of the story are not joined together well. There’s the political scandal, the monster, and the AI, and apart from a few rather flimsy connections they all seem like separate stories.
Most of the world building and character backgrounds are too vague, rather generic, and not very interesting.
Overall, it was mostly a disappointment with maybe a few decently creepy moments.
