To study language ‘scientifically’ is, in part, to refuse to accept uncritically, or ‘unscientifically’, the ways of thinking that, ahead of any professional training, we all bring to it. We must strive to be as objective as we can, about individual languages and the nature of language in general. It is hard, but can be marvellously liberating.
