The Ukrainian nation was the main loser. A significant majority of Ukrainians wanted Yanukovych to sign the European Association Agreement, expecting to gain from access to its markets, job opportunities, and presumably visa-free travel. They hoped that democracy and the rule of law would be reinforced in Ukraine. But their president had let them down.
