Martha A. Sandweiss, Professor of History, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on the history of the western United States, exploring the experiences of different Native communities both before and after American settlement. A former museum curator and director, she has written widely on the photography of Indian peoples in the 19th and 20th centuries. She is currently writing a book about a photograph made at Ft. Laramie during the treaty negotiations of 1868, that follows the life of the young Lakota girl who appears in the image.
