About the Author
Noel Coward made his name as a playwright with The Vortex (1924), in which he also appeared. His numerous other successful plays included Hay Fever, Private Lives, Design for Living, and Blithe Spirit. During the war he wrote screenplays such as Brief Encounter (1944) and This Happy Breed (1942). His volumes of verse, autobiography and letters have all been published to acclaim by Methuen Drama. Coward was knighted in 1970 and died three years later in Jamaica.

Judith Bliss is a famous actress who, after a string of successful roles, has retired to her country retreat. Missing the adulation of her public, she has has invited a fan over for a weekend of uninterrupted adoration - unaware that the rest of her family has company arriving too. Hoping for a delightful weekend, the four unwitting visitors are subjected to the full force of the Bliss’s theatrical lifestyle... Things are further complicated by the fact that only Charles can see her, which results in some hilarious exchanges and miunderstandings.

Written
in 1926 and originally entitled Ritz Bar, Semi-Monde was considered too
daring for its time: "its production in London or New York seemed
unlikely as some of the characters, owing to lightly suggested
abnormalities, would certainly be deleted by the censor" (Noël Coward,
Present Indicative). The play finally received its public premiere only
after Coward's death, at the Citizen's Theatre, Glasgow, in September
1977.
