The Benefits of Meditation for Productive People

First let's define what I mean by productive. A productive person in the modern sense is someone who does a lot and wants to do even more. Someone who manages to do everything. But in my opinion, a truly productive person does less job, but does a better job.
Example: Peter is the manager of a small design studio, and he works 12 hours a day. He attends meetings, looking for employees and clients, calls the landlords... What does he get? Peter does a lot of extra work, gets tired, and doesn't pay enough attention to his business. His relationship with his wife and friends deteriorates. Peter is tortured and disillusioned with life. (If you recognize yourself in Peter, Greg McKeown at Essentialism will give you lots of practical advice.)

I don't know how to help Peter, but I do know how not to fall into his shoes. One way to do this is to meditate. Meditation is an attention-control, "time-wasting" and ritualistic-routine action. Here's why meditation works:

1. You learn to think only one thought at a time. You focus on what's important, aiming for what's most important.
2. Meditation is "empty" time. In that 10, 15, 30 minutes you won't reach for your phone, check your work email, prepare your presentation. It makes you feel and appreciate your time.
3. In just a few weeks, you'll get used to meditating in the morning. This repetitive action will soothe you in itself - like brushing your teeth, a cup of coffee or checking your email in the morning ;-)
4. You won't be able not to think. There will come a moment when you think about the most global questions of your life. "What is my mission?", "Do I like the way I live my life?", "How can I make the world a kinder place?"
5. The cherry on the cake: meditation energizes you for the day. You build up your energy like a runner before a start. And then - faster than a bullet to your goal!
