Edwards struggled with a difficult personal life, exacerbated by the times in which he lived.
He was openly homosexual at a time when homosexuality was illegal in Britain, and registered as a conscientious objector during World War II. Both society and his peers were less than accepting of Edwards because of this. He battled with mental health problems and tragically committed suicide in 1958 by swallowing a cyanide capsule.
