The poet and prose writer Morris Rosenfeld (1862–1923) captured the hearts and minds of the newly proletarianized Jewish urban masses by articulating their sense of triple banishment: exiled from home, from nature, and by extension, from God. As Rosenfeld repeatedly stresses, nowhere in the New World can one find a physical space that mediates between the poles of desire.
