In Minoan culture the bee represented the soul and its eventual rebirth. In ancient Greece they embalmed the dead in large urns filled with honey, their bodies curled up in the fetal position, waiting to be born into their next life. Perhaps they were thinking of the life of the hive itself, which just keeps going on eternally, bee by bee by bee.
