The well-known Soviet prosewriter Regīna Ezera (born in 1930) is a People's Writer of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic with twenty books and many literary prizes to her credit. Particularly popular are her short novels about people from various walks of life in town and country today. Able to draw stimulating and exciting material from the most mundane and, at first glance, unpromising situations, she explores the inner world of her characters as if testing them for moral stamina and humanity. A special tone is lent to her stories by the frequent presence of animals; the author sometimes uses direct contact with them as a moral catalyst of values or as a measure of human kindness. Dramatic conflict in Regīna Ezera's stories is relieved by an element of comedy. The stories collected in 'The Swing' were written and first published in the 1960s and 1970s.
