"In art as in life, things aren't always what they appear to be. With the invention of photography almost two centuries ago, the subjective eye of the artist had a new rival, and one that ostensibly depicted the world as it actually was. Today we know better, particularly now, in the age of digital imaging when photographs can be adulterated so easily.
Crazy Photography presents the work of more than fifty contemporary photographers from all over the world demonstrating how the way we capture and look at images has been revolutionised in recent years. In four chapters well-known photographers such as Liu Bolin, Ian Crawford and Pep Ventosa alongside young practitioners like Ari Mahardika and Jan Oliehoek take us on a stunning tour through a visual gallery that reflects our dreams and fears and gives us new, original insights into our consciousness as well as our environment. By skilfully manipulating and playing with images, the artists challenge our perceptions and beliefs, inducing in us an altered view of what seems to be familiar or ordinary".

The popularity of the television series Mad Men has raised the public awareness of advertising firms and what may or may not happen behind the scenes. We all recognise advertising when we see it: it's those bits that surround the editorial content in papers and magazines, that interrupt TV programmes or pop up on the websites you like to browse. As a discipline it might be defined as follows: advertising is about creating a message about something (usually a product or service) and then getting it out to people in the hope that they will react in a particular way - which in all likelihood means "buying it". Or put another way, it's paid persuasive communication that uses the mass media to connect an identified sponsor - the person or company that pays for the ad - with its target audience. This book examines the different elements of those definitions and shows readers - through discussion of the ten key principles underlying all great advertising - how to create dynamic, well-targeted adverts of their own.
Engagingly written by journalist and critic Robert Shore, this book provides the basic principles behind creating a successful advertisement. With clear explanations, illustrations and checklists for each chapter, the reader is guided through what goes into making an advertisement work.

The rules of architecture have been discussed since the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius coined the trilogy firmitas, utilitas and venustas, most commonly translated as firmness, commodity and delight. Put simply, this means that a building should stand up and endure, that it should serve its function, and that it should give pleasure to its users and the wider community.
Great buildings, like great art, contain something that is impossible to define or pin down. But that greatness, in almost all cases, overlays the principles set out in this book. While one cannot guarantee that a building will be great, if all the principles are followed, you will avoid the pitfalls to which too many are subject.
This new title in our "10 Principles" series provides clear explanations of each tenet along with useful illustrations to help the reader visualize what is being discussed. The author assumes no background on the subject, but an interest in learning more about what goes into making a building work. An experienced writer on this subject, Ruth Slavid provides a useful and illuminating primer to the field that is accessible to students of architecture, architects or architectural historians or anyone interested in the principles behind the buildings that surround them.

The Belle Еpoque (Beautiful Era), which dates from the late nineteenth century to the start of World War I, was an incredible period of creative and scientific activity. Until his death in 1901 at the age of 36, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was one of its leading names along with poets and writers such as Guy de Maupassant and Emile Zola. He exhibited with Vincent Van Gogh and was a friend of Oscar Wilde whom he met during his time in London. Creating literally thousands of artworks during his short life, the images that Toulouse-Lautrec created were evocative of the mood of that time. His drawings and lithographs were often playful or satirical, but captured the essence of his subject.
This book brings together over 170 images. In addition, there are documentary images from the period depicting life in fin de siеcle Paris and selected cities around the world. Clothing, architecture and images of street life are featured and where possible photographs of the people Toulouse-Lautrec featured in his works such as Aristide Bruant.

This beautifully illustrated book shows examples of Russian dress and accessories from the 15th to the early 20th century. Derived from the collection of the State Historical Museum and covering both dress worn in the countryside and in the city, this book is a fabulous feast of splendid patterns and fine detail. From exuberantly colourful and embellished dresses to elegantly sumptuous brocades and silks, the garments and accessories included in this book are an inspiration. In the first part of the book we look at traditional Russian dress which was worn by all Russian peasants, by the urban petit bourgeoisie and by merchants. This type of clothing became accepted as national dress. In the towns and cities, dress was influenced by the Parisian styles but interpreted by Russian seamstresses reflecting the love of bright colours, multi-coloured patterns and decorative features in evidence in traditional dress. In the second part of the book we see examples of the Paris-inspired urban dress. With authoritative essays written by experts L. V. Yefimova and T. S. Aleshina, Russian Elegance is an invaluable resource for fashion designers, artists, fashion historians, set and costume designers, or anyone interested in these beautiful designs.

This book has above all a practical purpose. It is an album of illustrations rather than a treatise, and gives examples rather than precepts. In it we wished to avoid the underwater hazards of theory, which, however correct they might appear, are always too imprecise and generalized as presented in abstract form. Masterpieces always speak for themselves, and the surest way to draw lessons from them is to analyze them, and not to try to make them exemplify a conclusion already reached, which often turns out to be too abstract to cover exceptions or special cases. The latter seems to us too dangerous a procedure to apply to those branches of art which would appear least amenable to fixed rules and in which the most important place is occupied by the artist's instinct, imagination and even caprice.

This book presents the finest examples of late-Russian iconography (16th to early 20th Century), with works showing rare subjects, such as Christ aching in the Synagogue by an unknown royal iconographer of the end of the 17th century, or the 19th-century Depiction of an Iconostasis. These masterpieces reveal a whole seam of the nation's cultural inheritance that until recently had been reatively unknown even to specialists. Assembled ring the revolutionary years at Kolomenskoye, a forrmer royal estate in the south-east of Moscow transformed into a Museum of Ancient Russian, this unique collection of Russian icons hides complete sets of icons from the interiors ruined or destroyed churches and monasteries.
Masterpieces from the Kolomenskoye Collection comprise icons dating back to the time of Ivan Terrible (1530-84), when the originality of local iconographic schools based on ancient centres such as Novgorod, Pskov and Tver largely disappeared under Moscow's new leadership. Peter the Great's reforms in the 17th Century gave way to western influence in all spheres of Russian lifestyle; Russian iconography underwent major changes in themes, styles and details, with historical figures, landscapes and architectural elements featured, me icons of this showed the architecture of a ole town, such as the panorama of Veliky Ustyug a mid-17th-century icon, or a view of Archangel painted in 1741. By drawing attention to fragments from the icons, this book invites the reader to look to carefully at masterpieces and to investigate details themselves.
