Книга состоит из 3 частей. В первых 2х частей повествуется о воздухоплавании, но главным смыслом является супружеские и любовные потери. В первом рассказывалось о известном фотографе Надаре, который был из тех мужей, который ухаживал за своей женой, когда та лежала больная. Во втором о Фредерике Барнаби, который был влюблен в Сару Бернар (известную актрису начала ХХого века). Но их связь не долго продлился, и Барнаби остался с разбитым сердцем в течении многих лет. В обоих случаях мы видим разлуку, но совершенно разных в своем роде.
