My next novel, published by Simon & Schuster on the 9th February 2017, is inspired by the true story of singer and songwriter Alice Martineau. In 2002, Alice Martineau signed a recording contract with Sony – a tremendous achievement for any 29-year-old. But what makes Alice’s story quite remarkable is that she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) at birth and given a life expectancy of just 10 years. CF is an inherited disease caused by a faulty gene. This gene controls the movement of salt and water in and out of your cells, so the lungs and digestive system become clogged with mucus, making it hard to breathe and digest food. There is no cure. But Alice defied all medical expectations and, not only taking life in her stride, created one of music and song. Alice made every single breath count and, through her lyrics, she opened up her experience and expressed her feelings in a unique and beautiful way.
It would have been impossible to write this book without the terrific support I have been given from the Martineau family, along with the CF Trust and Sony Music. We all share the same goal, wanting this novel to celebrate Alice’s extraordinary character, her music and talent, her family and friends who stuck by her every single step of the way, and finally the courage and determination of those who battle with CF every day.
