Once upon a time a little fisherman's daughter received the privilege to become one of the most famous and well-paying geishas in Gion. Her presence was expected in every rich teahouse of this city and was a great accolade for the hosts. Her life was full of traditional dances, music and exalted dialogues, and her income was substantial. It sounds like a fairy-tale, but the reality wasn't like that at all. The little girl Chiyo had learned that her mother was about to die. Her father was an old man, so he could also die soon. It was clear to him that because of the difficult life situation his daughters could not support or feed themselves.
