Но однажды я взяла в руки книгу – и была ошеломлена: это не просто хорошо, это фантастически прекрасно! «Запретный край», действие которого происходит в Португалии времен величайшего поэта Луиса Камоэнса, в старом Китае тех же времен и в Китае 20-х годов прошлого столетия, написан столь сочно, столь пряно, что от книги невозможно было оторваться. И вот книга состоялась, и продолжение этой книги: «Жизнь на земле». Писатель планировал создать трилогию, но не успел. «Последнее явление Камоэнса» литературоведы считают вставной главой или же послесловием к роману «Запретный край».
Камоэнсом Слауэрхоф был одержим; образ этого средневекового поэта неоднократно встречается в его лирике и прозе. Дух Камоэнса возникает и в романе «Жизнь на земле». Главный герой этой книги, судовой телеграфист Кэмерон – здесь он обретает конкретное имя – настолько тесно ассоциирует себя с ним, что порой перевоплощается в него. Книги написаны в манере мистического реализма, изобилуют описаниями опасных приключений Камоэнса и Кэмерона в Китае. Романы, безусловно, не могут претендовать на абсолютную правду: Слауэрхоф, великий фантазер, весьма вольно обращался с историей и географией. Истинные факты порой не соответствуют датам или вставлены для красного словца, некоторых местностей просто не существует в природе. Но ведь это, в конце концов, мистический реализм, а не строгое научное исследование.
Читатель, который заинтересуется конкретными биографическими данными автора, сможет легко отыскать их в Википедии. Нужно заметить, что в этом источнике «Запретный край» фигурирует под названием «Запретное королевство», что кажется мне не совсем верным: ведь в романе речь идет не только о Португалии, которая действительно была королевством, но и о Китае, который королевством не был. Китай был империей. И обе эти территории были запретными для Камоэнса. Запретной областью является для него также и его возлюбленная, Диана, предназначенная в жены португальскому инфанту.
Я уверена, что читатель и ценитель настоящей литературы получит большое наслаждение от этих книг.
