Un cuore muto – come appare all’inizio la bellissima, misteriosa Elmina, la Chimera che i tre giovani del Nord sono venuti a incontrare, sollevati nell’aria dall’«entusiastico Pegaso» sul loro carro apollineo –, un deserto dove solo a momenti trilla il suono del Cardillo, questo essere piccolo fra i piccoli, inerme e spietato, che «distrugge chi lo ama». Allora il cardellino che ci era apparso all’inizio quale vittima di sinistri giochi infantili diventa l’onnipresente Cardillo, che ci avvolge e ci sconvolge come l’immensità che non conosciamo. La sua voce è destinata a rimanere per sempre nella mente di chi ha la ventura di udirla. Così sarà di questo romanzo.
