О премии

Премия Уолтера Дина Майерса за выдающуюся детскую литературу, известная как «Уолтеры», была учреждена американской некоммерческой организацией We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) в 2014 году, а первая награда была вручена в 2016 году.

Премия присуждается "разным авторам, в чьих произведениях представлены разные главные герои и значимым образом рассматривается разнообразие".

Награда была названа в честь известного американского писателя Уолтера Дина Майерса (1937-2014), написавшего для детей и молодёжи более ста книг разных жанров. Майерс был третьим национальным послом по делам молодёжи, а также сторонником разнообразия детских и подростковых книг.

Программой награждения управляют содиректора WNDB.

Первоначально премией награждались только книги для молодёжи. В 2018 году премия расширилась, появилось две категории: книги для детей и книги для подростков.
