In dreamlike sequences, a man symbolically confronts the trauma of his family’s incarceration in the Japanese internment camps during World War II. This infamous event is made emotionally clear through his meeting a group of children all with strange name tags pinned to their coats. The man feels the helplessness of the children. Finally, desperately he releases the name tags like birds into the air to find their way home with the hope for a time when Americans will be seen as one people—not judged, mistrusted, or segregated because of their individual heritage.
Sixty years after thousands of Japanese Americans were unjustly imprisoned, the cogent prose and haunting paintings of renowned author and illustrator Allen Say remind readers of a dark chapter in America’s history.

A Caldecott Honor–winning author–illustrator team brings us a Caribbean Cinderella story, told from the perspective of the magical godmother.

You may think you already know this story about a beautiful servant girl, a cruel stepmother, a magnificent ball, and a lost slipper. But you’ve never heard it for true.

Now you can hear the tale from someone who was there: a poor washerwoman from the island of Martinique. She has just one thing in the world to love, her goddaughter Cendrillon. When she finds Cendrillon heartsick over a rich man’s son, at first she doesn’t know what to do. But she has sharp wits, a strong will, and the magic wand her mother left her—and soon she has a plan to give her dear Cendrillon the gift of a love that will change her life.

Adapted from a traditional Creole story, this fresh retelling captures all the age-old romance and magic of Cinderella, melding it with the vivid beauty of the Caribbean and the musical language of the islands.

“This small and simple concept book describes the colors in a spring morning, a summer day, a fall evening, and a winter night. Four specific scenes lead up to each panoramic double-page spread that features a farmhouse with a girl and a boy, a cat and a dog. Siddals’s appropriately straightforward and economical text is brought to life by Mather’s folksy watercolors. . . . It is well done without being overdone, and the size is just right.” —School Library Journal

“Cheerful yet elegant, spare yet satisfying, compact yet enveloping: these are hardly the words usually associated with simple concept books for the youngest children. But words and paintings combine to create a season book that surprises to the end. . . . Both author and artist capture the seasons with poetic intensity and wonder, finishing after ‘Winter night’ with the simplest yet pleasing conclusion: ‘Good night.’”—ALA Booklist

“A book of simple but deeply gratifying pleasures.” —Publishers Weekly

The story of a little goose who had to leave home to find out what no one could teach her. Adopted by woodchucks at birth, goose never feels she truly belongs ... until the day she discovers she can fly.

Written in 1996, Goose was named a best book of the year by both School Library Journal and Horn Book. In 2016 it won the Phoenix Picture Book Award from the Children's Literature Association.

"I wrote Goose for my daughter when she was having a terrible time getting used to her first year of college. It was not intended as a book, but she suggested that it should be. It turns out that people see Goose not only as a story for children, but often give it to young people who are about to go to college or into the work world, or to retirees who are about to enter some new phase of life. It is also, obviously, a book about the difficulties faced by an adoptive child—or by any child who feels she or he doesn't quite fit into the family." —Molly Bang

Experience a child’s view of the world in this extraordinarily imaginative picture book about maps

"An imaginative, child-centered title that should be examined and enjoyed, and one that will also make a wonderful springboard for teachers introducing the concepts of mapping or autobiography," said School Library Journal.

In each spread of this bold and humorous picture book, children can examine their place in the world around them through detailed and engaging maps that are drawn from a child's perspective.

Twelve beautifully illustrated maps, such as Map of My Day and Map of My Family, will fascinate children, teaching about both mapping and telling one's story.

When finished reading the book, children can unfold the jacket—it turns into a poster-size map for them to use for drawing and creating.
