О премии

Премия Коста (англ. Costa Book Award) — одна из наиболее авторитетных литературных премий Великобритании.

Премия присуждалась в период с 1971 по 2022 год.

Утверждена в 1971 году и до 2006 года носила название Уитбредовская премия (англ. Whitbread Book Award) по названию фирмы-спонсора Whitbread Group, работающей преимущественно в гостиничном и ресторанном бизнесе.
В 2006 году обязанности главного спонсора взяла на себя входящая в Whitbread Group компания Costa Coffee, владеющая 600 мелкооптовыми магазинами по продаже кофе и 200 кофейнями на территории Великобритании, в связи с чем премия была переименована в Премию Коста.

Премия присуждалась Ассоциацией книготорговцев Великобритании. Претендовать на премию, наряду с британскими писателями, могли также авторы из Ирландии. Писатели не обязательно должны быть британцами или ирландцами, но они должны проживать в Великобритании или Ирландии не менее шести месяцев в каждом из предыдущих вручению Премии трех лет.

Премия ставила своей задачей пропаганду чтения и поощрение произведений, способных распространить удовольствие от чтения в более широкой аудитории, и в связи с этим являлась более «демократичной», чем Букеровская премия.

Премия присуждалась ежегодно в следующих номинациях:

Шорт-лист определялся судейской коллегией и включал шесть претендентов на получение Премии.
Далее проходило публичное голосование с определением первых трех призовых мест.

Все время, пока идет избрание, авторство оставалось анонимным до самого конца голосования.

Лауреаты получали по £ 5,000 тысяч фунтов стерлингов.
Из пяти лауреатов выбирался абсолютный победитель, который получал £25,000 тысяч фунтов стерлингов. Его произведение носило титул «Книга года» (Costa Book of the Year).

Денежная Премия за рассказ составляла £3500 за первое место, £1500 - за второе и £500 - за третье место.

В 2021 году Джилл Макдоналд (Jill McDonald), CEO компании Costa Coffee, объявил о закрытии Премии Коста, и в феврале 2022 года состоялось последнее награждение с призовым фондом £60,000.
