О премии

Национальная книжная премия – самая престижная в США. Ее основали издатели в 1950 году, а сейчас премией управляет Национальная книжная ассоциация.

National Book Award for Fiction может получить только произведение американского автора, изданное в США.
Сегодня премия включает четыре номинации:
- художественная проза
- поэзия
- детская литература
- документальная литература (вопреки названию).

Победитель получает 10 тысяч долларов. У премии внушительный список всемирно известных лауреатов: Сол Беллоу, Уильям Фолкнер, Филип Рот, Дон Делилло, Кормак Маккарти и другие. Также в рамках премии вручается специальная медаль «За выдающийся вклад в американскую литературу». Ею, среди прочих, награждены Рэй Брэдбери, Стивен Кинг и Урсула Ле Гуин.

Правом номинирования обладают издательства. В каждой номинации создается отдельное жюри, которое выбирает финалистов, а затем победителя.

История

Не будет ошибкой утверждать, что Национальная книжная премия — одна из старейших литературных наград США, ведь в первый раз она вручалась в далёком 1936 году. И всё же собственную историю премии принято отсчитывать от 1950 года, когда её стал присуждать Национальный книжный комитет (с 1989 года — Национальной книжной ассоциации / National Book Foundation, которая и управляет премией до сегодняшнего дня.

This book is the fifth collection in Craig Santos Perez’s ongoing from unincorporated territory series about the history of his homeland, the western Pacific island of Guåhan (Guam), and the culture of his indigenous Chamoru people. “Åmot” is the Chamoru word for “medicine,” commonly referring to medicinal plants. Traditional Chamoru healers were known as yo’åmte; they gathered åmot in the jungle and recited chants and invocations of taotao’mona, or ancestral spirits, in the healing process.

Through experimental and visual poetry, Perez explores how storytelling can become a symbolic form of åmot, offering healing from the traumas of colonialism, militarism, migration, environmental injustice, and the death of elders.
