This book covers some important methods for the analysis of micro-array data and QTL. It is also considered important that readers learn to read and understand the relevant literature, because it is a fast moving subject field. R and Bioconductor used in this book. The student can explore the dependencies and the structure in a large multivariate data set, and can apply the multivariate methods correctly. The reader can also analyze micro-arrays and he/she known the basics of QTL, linkage analysis and association studies. The reader is able to read and understand the relevant literature. Multivariate data analysis is basically a collection of many statistical methods that are applicable to large and/or high dimensional data sets. All methods that are covered in this book, are often applied in industry and research institutions.

Animal breeding is a branch of animal science that addresses the evaluation of the genetic value of domestic livestock. Selecting animals for breeding with superior the genetic value in growth rate, egg, meat, milk, or wool production, or have other desirable traits has revolutionized agricultural livestock production throughout the world. This handbook include scientific theory of animal breeding; population genetics, quantitative genetics, statistics, and molecular genomics. The Applied Animal Breeding and Genetics handbook provides knowledge on the role and sustainable use of genetic variation in animals by providing knowledge to support the adequate supply of safe and healthy food of animal origin, and to enhance welfare and productivity of animals. The handbook combines quantitative and molecular genetics related to the biological functioning of animals. Also, describe genetic variation in farm and companion animals, and examines opportunities to use naturally occurring genetic variation in selection schemes.
  • Freshwater Fish Farming Mohamed Megahed

The objective of this Book is to estimate the potential for freshwater fish farming (Tilapia, Catfish, Eels, Crap and Salmon) in order to stimulate improved planning for aquaculture development and to provide a tool to plan comprehensively for technical assistance in fish farming activities. Development of aquaculture holds the most promise for improving food security through increasing the supply of fish. Also, focus on Pond construction, pen farming, production of fish fry and management.
  • Development of Marine Shrimp Farming in Sinai, Egypt Mohamed Megahed

    Язык: Английский
Shrimp aquaculture plays a vital role as an alternative source of income for coastal fishery communities as it contribute in reducing the pressure on marine natural resources and recently is considered as an important sector for supporting rural economic development. It is expected to show growth in the marine shrimp sector in Egypt, and the success of individual operations will depend on the successful application of a variety of multidisciplinary activities. Economic viability must be linked to better marketing strategies and food safety, transparency, traceability, quality, and sustainability issues are at the forefront of Egyptian concerns and actions. Technical improvements are expected to continue to improve cost efficiency and stimulate further species diversification at a time when fisheries production is stagnant and in certain sectors in decline. Simplified legislations and licensing procedures have been called and continued as well as coherent policies for research and development is essential. The major goal of this project was to create jobs for Bedouin community in Sinai and also to contribute to eradicate illiteracy of these groups of people live in Sinai.
  • Application of Genetics in Shrimp Farming Mohamed Megahed
    ISBN: 9783659388590

Studies of genetic variation within and among species of penaeid shrimp in nature are of interest to culturists. They provide information about genetic differences among potential founder populations for initiation of aquaculture stocks. In aquaculture, the application of genetic techniques provides opportunities to maximize the benefits of selective breeding, develop new strains of species, including hybrids, maintain genetic vigor in farmed stocks and provide an early warning system for possible undesired inbreeding, explore the potential of genetically enhanced traits such as improved growth rates and disease resistance.
  • Various Perspectives in Fisheries Management and Protection Mohamed Megahed

This book aims to provide the fisheries manager with tools and innovative solutions to achieve the main task of balancing the pressure on the fish stocks and fishing zones. By bringing stakeholders together to share experiences, learn together and contribute to decision making processes and everyone see his point of view reflected in the policy. Also, this book deals with fisheries governance and fisheries management. Discuss challenges that fisheries governance face and explore ways to strengthen fisheries governance. The book provides insights and skills to bring stakeholders in the fisheries system and help them understand each other's perspectives, manage their conflicts and learn together. The book materials are interactive and readers will practice a range of participatory tools and methodologies in a real-life case. The readers will finally able to apply the concepts learned by presenting an action plan for their own professional situation. Finally, the readers will know about fisheries governance and co-management concepts, challenges faced in governance and management.
  • Diversity of Microorganisms: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Microorganisms Mohamed Megahed
    ISBN: 9783659287169
    Год издания: 2012

Microbiology usually only refers to the study of prokaryotic organisms: Bacteria and Archaea. This disposition does not do justice to the enormous diversity of unicellular eukaryotes (= protists), and their direct multicellular descendants, the seaweeds. These organisms encompass an evolutionary and functional diversity which far exceeds that of plants, animals or Fungi, and play a crucial yet understudied (and hence undervalued) role in ecosystems. The organisms which will be dealt with in this book range from minute to super-sized and include some well-known examples such as Euglena, Paramecium and the green and brown algae we all know from the breakwaters on our coast, but also many parasites, causing important human diseases such as malaria and sleeping disease. It has been estimated that a single group of microalgae, the diatoms, is responsible for more than a quarter of the total primary production on earth, more than all the tropical rainforests of the world taken together. They form the basis of marine food webs which are becoming increasingly important for human subsistence.
  • Detection and identification of aquatic micro-organisms Mohamed Megahed

Diversity of organisms, especially of non-prokaryotic organisms is measured in terms of form, shape, structure, color etc. differences. For microorganisms these criteria are not particularly relevant. Because of their small size, physical traits are of limited use. The diversity of microorganisms is expressed mostly in terms of physiological capabilities and biochemical and molecular differences. For a long time bacterial classification was mostly based on such characteristics. In recent decades diversity of bacteria and archaea has been more and more expressed in the light of molecular and genetic diversity.

Two strains of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were developed through mass and pedigreed selection techniques. Performance of the mass-selected line has been tested against a control and commercial lines used by the farmers. On station testing indicated an improvement of 35% over the control, the base population, from which the selected O. niloticus stock was developed. In an initial farm trial, the improved O. niloticus stock performed 51% better than the commercial line that is regularly distributed by a commercial hatchery to the local farmers. Additional farm testing of the mass-selected line is still in progress. The mass-selected line is currently being evaluated against the pedigree selected line. The best candidates will be identified and used in the pedigree selection program.
  • How do aquatic organisms function? Mohamed Megahed

    Издательство: LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing
    Язык: Английский
This book takes a fundamental, biophysical approach toward animal physiology. Shows the progressive changes, modifications, and developments of physiological systems from simple to complex animals. Comparisons show the similarities and differences in how animals function, but stress fundamentally similar adaptations in very different animals. Also, provide comparative physiology of animals, in a strongly environmental context. It provides full analysis of the basic principles of physiological adaptations, in both vertebrates and invertebrates and how they allow integration with the environment, detailed and integrated reviews of how animals sense, react to and cope with particular environments - the marine and freshwater worlds, the particularly challenging seashore and estuarine zones, the different kinds of terrestrial habitat, and the parasitic environment. Integrated with ecological principles and with behavioural responses used by animals in coping with environmental challenges. This book provides a stand-alone core text for undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative physiology, animal physiology, or environmental physiology and environmental biology.
