They provide information about genetic differences among potential founder populations for initiation of aquaculture stocks. Microbiology usually only refers to the study of prokaryotic organisms: Bacteria and Archaea. This disposition does not do justice to the enormous diversity of unicellular eukaryotes (= protists), and their direct multicellular descendants, the seaweeds. These organisms encompass an evolutionary and functional diversity which far exceeds that of plants, animals or Fungi, and play a crucial yet understudied (and hence undervalued) role in ecosystems. The organisms which will be dealt with in this book range from minute to super-sized and include some well-known examples such as Euglena, Paramecium and the green and brown algae we all know from the breakwaters on our coast, but also many parasites, causing important human diseases such as malaria and sleeping disease. It has been estimated that a single group of microalgae, the diatoms, is responsible for more than a quarter of the total primary production on earth, more than all the tropical rainforests of the world taken together. They form the basis of marine food webs which are becoming increasingly important for human subsistence.

Diversity of organisms, especially of non-prokaryotic organisms is measured in terms of form, shape, structure, color etc. differences. For microorganisms these criteria are not particularly relevant. Because of their small size, physical traits are of limited use. The diversity of microorganisms is expressed mostly in terms of physiological capabilities and biochemical and molecular differences. For a long time bacterial classification was mostly based on such characteristics. In recent decades diversity of bacteria and archaea has been more and more expressed in the light of molecular and genetic diversity.

Two strains of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were developed through mass and pedigreed selection techniques. Performance of the mass-selected line has been tested against a control and commercial lines used by the farmers. On station testing indicated an improvement of 35% over the control, the base population, from which the selected O. niloticus stock was developed. In an initial farm trial, the improved O. niloticus stock performed 51% better than the commercial line that is regularly distributed by a commercial hatchery to the local farmers. Additional farm testing of the mass-selected line is still in progress. The mass-selected line is currently being evaluated against the pedigree selected line. The best candidates will be identified and used in the pedigree selection program.
