Frederick Douglass never lived in Brooklyn, but from the early 1850s onward, his frequent visits to the fast-growing city invariably attracted considerable attention. Brooklyn was home to several leading abolitionists who were key allies of Douglass, a roster led by Henry Ward Beecher, Theodore Tilton, and Rev. James and Elizabeth Gloucester. Yet through the Civil War, pro-Confederacy sentiment also ran strong, as evidenced by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle’s vitriolic attacks on Douglass and his friends.Akashic's position as a centerpiece in the Brooklyn literary world will help position this title.Preface and Afterword to be contributed by a notable scholar and another public figure.Theodore Hamm is a well-respected New York journalist who was a founding editor of The Brooklyn Rail.Theodore Hamm is currently the chair of journalism and media studies at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn.Akashic's promotion will have a strong social media componentGalleys available in March 2016.

Frederick Douglass was born in 1817 and lived for ten years as a slave upon a Maryland plantation. Then he was bought by a Baltimore shipbuilder. He learned to read, and, being attracted by "The Lady of the Lake," when he escaped in 1838 and went disguised as a sailor to New Bedford, Mass., he adopted the name Douglas (spelling it with two s's, however). He lived for several years in New Bedford, being assisted by Garrison in his efforts for an education. In 1841, at an anti-slavery convention in Nantucket, he exhibited such intelligence, and showed himself the possessor of such a remarkable voice, that he was made the agent of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and became a leader of the abolitionist movement. This edition comprises his essential writings: Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass My Bondage And My Freedom Abolition Fanaticism In New York The Heroic Slave The Life And Times Of Frederick Douglass: From 1817-1882

He was one of the most astonishing men from a time period that included the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant, and Frederick Douglass defied the standards of the 19th century. With some instruction from the kindly wife of a slavemaster, he taught himself to read and write and eventually escaped his human bondage, going on to become one of the most brilliant orators of the day and a best-selling author as well. His second autobiography, My Bondage and My Freedom, gives his readers a more detailed impression of the period during which he transitioned from slave to freeman.

  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave & Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Frederick Douglass
    ISBN: 9780345478238, 0345478231
    Год издания: 2004
    Издательство: Modern Library
    Язык: Английский
This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition combines the two most important African American slave narratives into one volume.

Frederick Douglass’s Narrative, first published in 1845, is an enlightening and incendiary text. Born into slavery, Douglass became the preeminent spokesman for his people during his life; his narrative is an unparalleled account of the dehumanizing effects of slavery and Douglass’s own triumph over it. Like Douglass, Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery, and in 1861 she published Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, now recognized as the most comprehensive antebellum slave narrative written by a woman. Jacobs’s account broke the silence on the exploitation of African American female slaves, and it remains crucial reading. These narratives illuminate and inform each other. This edition includes an incisive Introduction by Kwame Anthony Appiah and extensive annotations.
