Дальше следуют другие сюжеты — о доме, наделяющем жильцов разными свойствами (от быстрорастущих бород до способности слышать мертвых); о старике с двумя тенями; о мужчине, который разводил птиц, а теперь рискует попасть в куриный ад; о таксисте, устраивающем экскурсию для трех привидений.

Неизменно одно — в каждом рассказе обыденное тесно переплетается с фантастическим, что в сумме складывается в почти сказочное, но довольно тревожное повествование.

Каждая новелла, по сути, воплощает то или иное воспоминание, в основном из школьного прошлого главной героини, имя, возраст и характер которой остаются неизвестными. Показанные через призму детского мышления, это живые и интересные портреты людей, обитающих по соседству.

В сборнике активно используется такой стилистический прием, как ономатопея. Всякий очерк начинается с загадочной фразы, смысл которой становится понятен ближе к концу повествования.
