A Costa dos Murmúrios, publicado em 1988, é o mais famoso romance de Lídia Jorge, tanto em Portugal como no estrangeiro. O seu aparecimento foi um êxito desde o primeiro momento, tendo chegado a vender cerca de 50.000 exemplares em menos de um ano. A obra é produto da experiência que a autora viveu em África e, particularmente, dos seus três anos em Moçambique, imediatamente antes da queda do regime de ditadura em 1974. Com a nova ordem política, Portugal aceita a autonomia da sua colónia, que em Junho de 1975 obtém a independência plena. Entre elas, é particularmente dolorosa a do seu marido, que se converte num repressor sanguinário, o que conduz Eva a manter, por despeito, uma relação amorosa com um jornalista mulato. Para além do seu vigoroso conteúdo como personagem de carne e osso, Luís é igualmente símbolo de um regime incapaz de gerar futuro algum e que tenta defender-se pela força.
