The Rugby World Cup final of 1995 was the last act of the most improbable exercise in mass seduction ever seen: Nelson Mandela's conquest of the hearts of white South Africa. The crunching hostility of the world's most violent game provided the triumphant conclusion of an astutely planned charm offensive that Mandela had begun in prison ten years earlier: to reconcile the most racially fractured nation on earth. He won over his enemies one at a time - his white jailers, apartheid's minister of justice, the chief of intelligence, South Arfica's army general who led the violent far Right - on the way of earning his freedom and then, in May 1994, the presidency of his country.

But the triumph of democracy was not the end of the story. Mandela knew that unless South Africa were to become united behind a common sense on nationhood, the danger remained of terrorism, chaos, civil war.

Mandela's genius was to transform that which divided black and white South Africa into a force for good. The green jersey of South Africa's Springbok rugby team, a beloved icon to many of the white population and a detested symbol of racial oppression to blacks, became a focus of his campaign to heal ancient wounds, unite the country and prevent civil war. When Mandela stepped onto the field of Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, on the day of the World Cup final, wearing the Springbok captain's jersey, he captured the hearts of white South Africans, forging for that afternoon an unprecedented and powerful patriotic bond with their black compatriots.
