Henry Steele Commager was an American historian who helped define Modern liberalism in the United States for two generations through his forty books and 700 essays and reviews. His principal scholarly works were his 1936 biography of Theodore Parker; his intellectual history The American Mind: An Interpretation of American Thought and Character since the 1880s (1950), which focuses on the evolution of liberalism in the American political mind from the 1880s to the 1940s; and his intellectual history Empire of Reason: How Europe Imagined and America Realized the Enlightenment (1977). Книгу с интересом прочитал, находясь в США, вскоре после крупных негритянских волнений в стране в связи с убийством Мартина Лютера Кинга в 1968 году. Собственно оно и явилось толчком к прочтению, когда я увидел эту книгу на магазинной полке. Книгу в сжатой и доступной для широкой публики форме написали два известных в то время американских историка, преподававших этот предмет в различных американских университетах. Их история начинается с прибытия к входу в Чесапикский залив прекрасным апрельским утром 1607 года трех побитых океанскими штормами судов под командованием капитана Кристофера Ньюпорта, именем которого позже был назван город на восточном побережье США. Заканчивают они свою историю войной в Корее и правлением администрации Эйзенхауэра, вместив в 550 страниц события временного…
