Gustav Janouch met Franz Kafka, the celebrated author of The Metamorphosis, as a seventeen-year-old fledgling poet. As Francine Prose notes in her wonderful preface, “they fell into the habit of taking long strolls through the city, strolls on which Kafka seems to have said many amazing, incisive, literary, and per- things to his companion and interlocutor, the teenage Boswell of Prague. Crossing a windswept square, apropos of something or other, Kafka tells Janouch, ‘Life is infinitely great and profound as the immensity of the stars above us. One can only look at it through the narrow keyhole of one’s personal experience. But through it one perceives more than one can see. So above all one must keep the keyhole clean.’”

Г.Яноух (чешский литератор и поэт) - современник Кафки, был знаком с отцом писателя. Он попросил отца Кафки, чтобы Франц оценил его стихи. Кафка познакомился со стихами молодого чеха, после чего у них состоялся ряд бесед, которые и предлагаются в этой книге.

Janouch war der Sohn eines Kollegen Kafkas in der Arbeiter-Versicherungs-Anstalt, der seinen Sohn, weil er dichtete, einmal zu Kafka brachte. Kafka nahm den jungen Mann mit großer Liebenswürdigkeit auf; er traf öfter mit ihm zusammen und sprach mit ihm über die verschiedensten literarischen Gegenstände.
Nach einem Vierteljahrhundert hat nun Janouch nach den Notizen, die er sich über diese Gespräche machte, ein Erinnerungsbuch geschrieben. Er sandte das Manuskript an Max Brod, der es - nach Inhalt und Form der Gespräche - für authentisch erklärte.
Es steht wohl außer Frage, dass die veröffentlichten Gespräche auf wirklich stattgefundenen Unterredungen beruhen, wenn auch ihre Formulierung bei der nachträglichen Stilisierung vermutlich eine etwas entschiedenere Fassung erhielt, als Kafka sie ihr ursprünglich gegeben haben mag. Dennoch ist Janouchs Buch als eine wertvolle biographische Quelle zu betrachten.
