In the city of Lisbon, Requiem's narrator has an appointment to meet someone on a quay by the Tagus at twelve. Misunderstanding twelve to mean noon as opposed to midnight, he is left to wait. As the day unfolds he has many unexpected encounters - with a young drug addict, a disorientated taxi driver, a cemetery keeper, the mysterious Isabel and the ghost of the late great poet Fernando Pessoa - each meeting travelling between the real and illusionary. Part travelogue, part autobiography, part fiction, Requiem becomes an homage to a country and its people, and a farewell to the past as the narrator lays claim to a literary forebear who, like himself, is an evasive and many-sided personality.

Come definire una storia come questa? A prima vista potrebbe sembrare un romanzo fantastico, ma forse sfugge a ogni possibile definizione. Tabucchi l'ha sottotitolato "Un mandala", ma a ben vedere, con criteri tutti occidentali, si tratta in fin dei conti di un'inchiesta, una ricerca che sembra condotta da un Philip Marlowe metafisico. Ma con la metafisica, in questa ricerca spasmodica e pellegrina, si sposa un concetto tutto terrestre della vita: sapori, odori, luoghi, citta, fotografie che sono legati al nostro immaginario, ai nostri sogni, ma anche alla nostra quotidiana esperienza. E allora? Nella sua nota Tabucchi suggerisce di pensare a un monaco vestito di rosso, a Holderlin e a una canzone napoletana. Potranno forse sembrare degli ingredienti incongrui. Ma forse e meglio non cercare la congruenza in uno dei piu stravaganti, visionari e insieme struggenti romanzi che la letteratura italiana ci abbia mai regalato. Il romanzo postumo del grande scrittore.

Il est composé de 13 nouvelles mais seules trois seront brièvement présentées dans le but de capter en quelques lignes l’univers de l’auteur.
« Chambres » : une femme s’occupe de son frère, un écrivain, qui est en fin de vie. Il est difficile pour elle, voire impossible, de le voir dans cet état, elle décide donc de le soulager. Pour ce faire, elle s’approche de lui avec une seringue et on comprend alors qu’elle va l’euthanasier. Se pose ici le problème des choix difficiles, douloureux ainsi que du tabou de l’euthanasie. La question du déterminisme est également abordée. Si elle l’avait fait plus tôt aurait-ce été légitime ? Cette légitimité existe-t-elle à ce moment donné ? Qu’adviendra t-il de cette sœur courageuse ? Parviendra t-elle à s’en remettre ? Des multitudes de questions traversent l’esprit. De plus, connaissant Antonio Tabucchi, on sait qu’il y aura obligatoirement des conséquences, positives ou non, car chaque acte entraîne une conséquence. C’est le principe du déterminisme que l’on peut déchiffrer à travers cette nouvelle.

« Les trains qui vont à Madras » : un homme part pour Madras, une ville d’Inde, en train (il y a une petite digression sur le choix du moyen de locomotion, celui-ci modifiera le voyage : question du déterminisme). Il rencontre un autre homme et tous deux sympathisent. Il met du temps à savoir ce que cet homme vient faire à Madras. Finalement ce dernier lui dit qu’il vient pour voir une statue bouddhiste. Le lendemain il lit dans le journal un article en rapport avec la statue et comprend par la même occasion la véritable raison de sa visite…

« Petites équivoques sans importance » : c’est la nouvelle éponyme. Un homme assiste au procès d’un de ses meilleurs amis, et en profite pour se remémorer les moments de leur jeunesse. Il y a dans cette nouvelle beaucoup de retours en arrière sous forme de digressions. Parfois on ne sait plus où l’on est, au procès ou dans sa jeunesse : le passé et le présent se rencontrent. Tous ses souvenirs sont semblables à des fantômes figés dans sa mémoire, la nostalgie parcourt le narrateur et par la même occasion, nous, lecteurs.
