The book is set in the Caribbean seas between 1670 and 1680, and it follows the adventures of the filibusters, who are pirates operating in the region. The story revolves around Raveneau de Lussan, a young French pirate known as the "Green Corsair," and his companion Buttafuoco. From this marriage, a daughter was born, who was with her father when he was executed by the Governor of Maracaibo, the Marquis of Montelimar, at the request of Duke Wan Guld.

Upon receiving confirmation of this news from Henry Morgan, who was not only his cousin Jolanda's husband but also the Governor of Jamaica, Enrico set sail for the New World to find out about the fate of his stepsister. His first stop was at the villa of Carmen de Montelimar, the sister-in-law of the former governor and a young widow in the prime of her beauty. Although he didn't gather much information from her, he found himself infatuated with her, and the feeling was mutual. The young marchioness would go on to rescue him multiple times from the troops searching for him after his true identity was discovered.

Throughout his adventures, the Count was accompanied by a diverse group. This included the Basque Mendoza, who had sailed with his uncle, the Black Corsair, the Gascon Don Barrejo, a Spanish soldier who had joined him in search of both adventure and doubloons, the buccaneer Buttafuoco, who guided him through the jungles of Pueblo Viejo, an adventurous Fleming nicknamed Don Ercole by Mendoza, and Lieutenant Verra, the vice-commander of the Folgore.

Dopo aver dato un trono a Yanez, in Alla Conquista di un Impero, Salgari dà all'eroe degli eroi, Sandokan, un regno da conquistare, o meglio da riconquistare. In Sandokan alla Riscossa viene recuperato l'antefatto raccontato da Yanez nel primo libro del ciclo Indo-Malese, Le Tigri di Mompracem. Sandokan parte alla riconquista del regno dei suoi padri. Sandokan Alla Riscossa è il resoconto del viaggio attraverso il Borneo settentrionale, seguendo il fiume Maludu, per raggiungere il lago Kinibalu, sul quale sorge la capitale dell'usurpatore e dove avverrà lo scontro finale. Durante il viaggio troviamo tutti gli elementi caratteristici della narrativa salgariana: le piante, gli animali esotici, le fughe, le insidie dell'acqua e del fuoco; gli assedi, gli assalti, le battaglie per terra e per acqua. Sandokan e i suoi compagni sono ormai invecchiati, ma queste sono solo caratteristiche estetiche. In realtà, i personaggi rimangono uguali a se stessi, personificazioni dell'eroe senza tempo.
