Alex Flinn 21

Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Douglas Adams 44 читателя 6 рецензий 7 цитат рейтинг 5 из 5

How shall we begin?
This is the story of a book called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - not an Earth book, never published on Earth and, until the terrible catastrophe occurred, never seen or even heard of by any Earthman. Nevertheless, a wholly remarkable book.
or
This is the story of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a number-one best seller in England, a weekly radio series with millions of fanatic listeners, and soon to be a television spectacle on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
or
This is the story of Arthur Dent, who, seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, is plucked off the planet by his friend, Ford Prefect, who has been posing as an out-of-work actor for the last fifteen years but is really a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Together they begin a journey through the galaxy aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, with the words don't panic written on the front. ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.")

In their travels they meet: •Zaphod Beeblebrox - the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch President of the Galaxy.
•Trillian - Zaphod's girl friend, formerly Tricia McMillan, whom Arthur once tried to pick up at a cocktail party.
•Marvin - a paranoid android, a brilliant but chronically depressed robot.
•Veet Voojagig - former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

To find the answers to these burning questions: Why are we born? Why do we die? And why do we spend so much time in between wearing digital watches?
Read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". But remember… don't panic, and don't forget to bring a towel.

In a world where people born with an exceptional skill, know as a Grace, are both feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of a skill even she despises: the Grace of killing.

As a Graced killer who has been able to kill a man with her bare hands from the age of eight, she is forced to work as the king’s thug. Feared be the court and shunned by those of her own age, the darkness of her Grace casts a heavy shadow over Katsa’s life.

Yet Katsa remains defiant, and when the King of Lenid’s father is kidnapped she investigates, and stumbles across a mystery. Who would want to kidnap the old man, and why? And who was the extraordinarily Graced man whose fighting abilities rivalled with her own?

The only thing Katsa is sure of is that she no longer wants to kill. The intrigue surrounding the kidnapping offers her a way out – and little does she realise, when she takes it, that something insidious and dark lurks behind the mystery, something spreading from the shadowy figure of a one eyed king...

F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald 65

Clare met Henry when she was six years old; he was thirty-six. Years later, when they are reunited and marry, they are the same age. This is possible because Henry suffers from Chrono-Displacement Syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes him to involuntarily time travel to moments of emotional significance for him, such as the childhood of his future wife or the scene of his mother's death. Clare and Henry try to lead a normal life and normal marriage in spite of Henry's frequent and dangerous disappearances to the past. They hold down jobs, visit friends, and try to have children in the balance of a passionate love for one another, the trials of Henry's disability, and what it means for their future together.

Neil Gaiman - The Graveyard Book
Neil Gaiman 32 читателя 11 рецензий 6 цитат рейтинг 5 из 5

In The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman has created a charming allegory of childhood. Although the book opens with a scary scene - a family is stabbed to death by "a man named Jack" - the story quickly moves into more child-friendly storytelling. The sole survivor of the attack - an 18-month-old baby - escapes his crib and his house, and toddles to a nearby graveyard. Quickly recognizing that the baby is orphaned, the graveyard's ghostly residents adopt him, name him Nobody ("Bod"), and allow him to live in their tomb. Taking inspiration from Kipling's The Jungle Book, Gaiman describes how the toddler navigates among the headstones, asking a lot of questions and picking up the tricks of the living and the dead. In serial-like episodes, the story follows Bod's progress as he grows from baby to teen, learning life's lessons amid a cadre of the long-dead, ghouls, witches, intermittent human interlopers. A pallid, nocturnal guardian named Silas ensures that Bod receives food, books, and anything else he might need from the human world. Whenever the boy strays from his usual play among the headstones, he finds new dangers, learns his limitations and strengths, and acquires the skills he needs to survive within the confines of the graveyard and in wider world beyond.
