The Inheritors is a quasi-science fiction novel on which Ford Madox Ford and Joseph Conrad collaborated. It looks at society's mental evolution and what is gained and lost in the process. Written before the first World War, its themes of corruption and the effect of the 20th Century on British aristocracy appeared to predict history. In the novel, the metaphor of the "fourth dimension" is used to explain a societal shift from a generation of people who have traditional values of interdependence, being overtaken by a modern generation who believe in expediency, callously using political power to bring down the old order. Its narrator is an aspiring writer who himself makes a similar transition at a personal level only to feel he has lost everything. The inheritors are a breed of cold materialists, calling themselves Fourth Dimensionists, whose task is to occupy the earth. An unsuccessful English writer meets a fascinating woman by chance, who seems to talk in metaphors. She claims to be from the Fourth Dimension and a major player in a plan to "inherit the earth." They go their separate ways with her pledge they will meet again and again. She has taken on his name and pretends to be his sister, invading firstly his down-on-their-luck aristocratic family by financing improvements to their estate, until she moves with his aunt, to Paris. "A Man Could Stand Up" - the third volume of Ford Madox Ford's highly-regarded tetralogy Parade's End, was originally published in 1926 and has recently been made into a BBC/HBO television miniseries. The novel opens on Armistice Day and is the climax of the Parade's End series. Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) was an English novelist, essayist, memoirist, poet and critic. He founded literary journals such as «The English Review» and «The Transatlantic Review» which were instrumental in the development of early 20th century English literature. He published renowned authors such as Thomas Hardy, H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, John Galsworthy, William Butler Yeats and many more in these influential journals and even collaborated with Joseph Conrad on three novels. He is now best remembered for «The Good Soldier» (1915), the «Parade's End» tetralogy (1924-28) and «The Fifth Queen» trilogy (1906-08). Included in «The Fifth Queen» trilogy is «Privy Seal» (1907), the second novel of the collection. The historical series presents a highly fictionalized account of Katharine Howard's arrival at the Court of Henry VIII, her eventual marriage to the king and her death.

Ladies Whose Bright Eyes is a novel by Ford Madox Ford. It was written in 1911 and extensively revised in 1935 and published under Ford's common pseudonym Daniel Chaucer. Although it has a time travel theme of a sort, is usually classed as mainstream literature rather than science fiction. As its author explicitly stated, "(...)The idea of this book was suggested to me by Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
